I make a habit of only buying quality travel guides and in all honestly you really couldn't get any better than the Michelin guides. I am collecting quite a decent collection of them, I don't even bother looking at others now.
As the advert on TV says it does what it says on the tin. It gives you all the facts you need, it doesn't overly bother with nice glossy pictures, instead you get well written and objective reviews of the destinations.
If you are going travelling anywhere I would always recommend the Michelin guides they are as the song says 'simply the best'

As we all know, high-end Burgundy is expensive. And since these bottles are rarely on the free market at all and we therefore have hardly any opportunity to taste the wine before buying, it is a good thing reliable connaisseurs make their independent notes public (and I'm glad for them they can make a living by that). Of course you have to assess by comparing your own impressions over a longer period of time who's palate you share. Is it Robert Parker's? Or Clive Coates'? At least for Burgundy I prefer Clive Coates (and I hardly ever agree with Robert Parker at all, because I do not like the overextracted wines he so admires), and consider this work therefore essential reading for the serious Burgundy-lover.

Before buying this book I made the mistake of thinking that, because it was shown as published in 2008, it had been revised. In fact, it appears to be simply a paperback version of the 2002 hardback - for example the Introduction apparently dates from 1999, and the copywright is still 2002.

Having said that, this is a very readable, enjoyable book. If you are looking for a list of wines with tasting notes and recommendations, you are looking in the wrong book. If you want something of the atmosphere and spirit of Burgundy, this is a the right book. Mr Faith really knows this area of France and its people, and an enormous amount about the winemaking techniques and the vagaries of the terroir, and at times makes one believe one is actually ... Accessible yet meticulously researched and articulated social and geohistory of the distinctions and similarities between the two most famous fine wine regions in the world, Pitte's story is the Picasso/Matisse of wine books. Pitte knows his history and he knows his wines, and he is not frightened of applying tough surgery to some of the most widely shared wine mythology. His brief, opinionated, compelling narrative outlines how the two regions developed their different ownership, production, supply chains and intellectual temperaments; and it is surprising somehow that such a brief but compelling history has not been published before. Masterly.

While the book certainly has faults, it was great for finding more obscure vineyards. The ones we tried were welcoming and sold excellent wine and this is after all the point of such a guide.

This is not Art (thank heavens), it is a nice thick book of good photos of Burgundy.

A good purchase if you're planning a trip.
