This book is so easy to understand. I'm awful at grammar but this breaks it down into small chunks. The activities are amaazing and definately help develop your understanding. I don't think I could have passed my English A level without this books help. I can't recommend it enough!!

Having met my daughter's maths teacher who showed me this book to be the foundation of her teachings to all the children in Year 3 (7/8 year olds) I knew that this, together with Books 1,2,4,5 & 6, would be the ideal support for homework assistance. Until I bought this from Amazon, I had no guidelines at all and didn't know if the arithmetic I was 'teaching' at home was too hard, too easy or just plain useless. Now with this book I have the perfect assistant, because I know that the specific topics covered and the level of difficulty is exactly matched to what my daughter is studying at school, so it's an excellent revisionary tool, and it's even enjoyable too! This is probably the best book I have ever read. I read Journey to the River Sea and loved it and then this one was recommended to me and I thought it was amazing. The book is all about this girl called Annika who lives in Vienna with her foster mum Ellie, Ellie's best friend Sigrid and three professors. However as a baby Annika was left in a church and Ellie took her in. One day Annika's mother comes to fetch her and Annika is swept on an adventure of discovery and unexpected danger. I would recommend this book to anyone aged 10-12 particularly as I think this is the age the book is really good for. However older or younger readers may also enjoy this story. I am assuming that the review below, copied from the `Comments' area of this item, was the original review that the other two reviews refer to - so well done to all who got it deleted from the system. I couldn't agree more with these two reviews on this item - this is a blank baby book for parents to fill in, with photos and text, as their baby develops over those precious first 12 months. What does puzzle me is the fact that it got a positive vote in the first place - unless the author is also guilty of voting for his own reviews which is quite possible given how his `helpful' votes whizz up - you only need to look back at the review pages to see how obtuse the subjects are and how suspicious the voting is, especially on items that have other reviews ... This is the best book i have ever read and it is great for people my age(which is 12). It was a tad rude at times but you get used to it as you go through the book. I would definately reccommend it to anyone who likes a laugh and a cry at times.

I am not a big book reader, far from it actually, but Ruby in the Smoke just had me cooped up indoors. This was actually the first real book i sat down and read in my own time, a good 5 years ago. I was on holiday, bored stiff because i was too young to go clubbing with my brothers and i was stuck in with mum and dad. So, mum suggested i read a book and handed my Ruby in the Smoke, she hadn't read it but bought it out of her love for the 'His Dark Materials' series. So i thought, what the hell, i'll give it a try. Very informative and everything you need but the format is not very good. It is all just writing, no pictures so it is slightly boring to revise from. The good thing is that some of the words are written in blue. However it is very good because it has all the right vocabulary and more. The delivery was fine but i ordered it with many other books one of which was out of stock so it took me 2 weeks. On the whole it was very good.

This is not the genre of books that I usually read but I was hooked from the first page. The quality of Phillip Pullman's writing meant that I was instantly transported to firstly Victorian London, then Razkavia, a country that I almost feel patriotic about. I now look forward to reading the preceeding three Sally Lockhart books.
