This book is a Puffin Classic. The children in this book are the same ones in `the Five Children and It' & `The Amulet'. Their names are Robert, Anthea, Jane, Cyril and baby Hilary, or as called in `the Five Children and It' - Lamb. If you don't know the story or have forgotten it, then I will jog your memory: It is about a second hand carpet that was bought for the nursery which had magical powers; it could transport them to wherever they wanted to go; also, a strange egg dropped out of it and it was the egg of a phoenix... I thought that this book was ok. It was a bit boring at parts but some of the bits were more thrilling than going to the circus or even to Alton Towers! As soon as I heard about the book Jacky Daydream I longed to have it - for two reasons: one - I needed a good book to read and Jacqueline Wilson has never disappointed me and two, after all the books I'd read by her based on children with problems like their parents splitting up or their best friend moving away or their pets dying, I ached to know how Jacqueline Wilson grew up: had she suffered what many of her characters had suffered? And Jacky Daydream had all the answers to my questions; it had everything from birth to books! It told me all about how things were when Jacqueline Wilson was a child; it described her rooms and had chapters on her family, friends and teachers. I can't believe I missed out on this one as a child... but it's just as good coming to it as an adult. The perfect lazy Sunday afternoon book to read. Adults can also escape to the wilds of Lake Windemere (Lake District), to sail up the Amazon, do battle with pirates and search for buried treasure on Cormorant Island. The year is 1929 and story is about four children - John, Susan, Titty and Roger (in age order) - who are holidaying on the shores of Lake Windemere with their mum and baby sister, Vicky. The children are an adventurous lot and love sailing in their boat, the Swallow. Towards the end of their holiday they persuade their mum to allow them on an adventure for a week. This Update, was very much needed, to accomodate for future specifications. Much better than the older version. Its clear cut, done to the bone!, it also has many cases, which are needed in the exam. This is a great book however, keep checking the specification for your year, to see if there is anything the book missed out or didnt cover well. Other than that, its a great book to learn from.

It is up there among the greats of children's literature with Wind in the Willows, The Water Babies, Peter Pan, Treasure Island and many others. In these days of computer games and electronic toys of one kind or another, books sadly are sometimes not as high on the list as they were a few years ago, perhaps that is why literacy in schools is not all that it could be. Perhaps it's because I haven't read the first book, although after reading this one I have no desire to read it. The story begins in late 1899 New York and California as it tells the tale of Elizabeth and Diane Holland (upper crust family in financial difficulty), Penelope Hayes (new wealth) and Lina Broud (Elizabeth's former maid) who is trying to set herself up as a "lady". A good deal of the first third of this book sets up what happened in The Luxe, Elizabeth's faked death so she could join her former servant and lover Will in California, Diana's pining over Henry Schoonmaker while Penelope schemes to trap him in marriage and Lina's entree' into society via an older gentleman. As i am in the middle of my gcses and coming up to my second year this book is very useful to me. It has well illustrated pictures and has been an enjoyment to read it not just for school uses. I hope to read more books by Linda Ashley and I think this book is very useful

As a teacher of secondary English I read a lot of literature, from older children's and young adult, through to 'Literature' with a capital 'L'. All Pterry's books are entertaining and worth a read, and I absolutely adore the 'Wee Free Men' books, as much as I like Pterry's recent 'adult' discworld novels. There is so much good writing out there aimed at teenagers, that it would be a shame to miss out just because we were born a decade too early. (And yes I did read Harry Potter with the children's covers and I thank JK everytime I see a teenage boy engrossed in a book!)
