I also was given this book aged 7 in 1979. It has been read so much that I had my original copy rebound in hardback 10 years ago. It has a fantastic range of poems which are grouped into different age groups for easy navigation. Accompanying each poem are the child's reasons why they chose to it to be included within the book. These insights, often charming, form a brilliant beginning for discussion about poetry with your child. From a child's perspective the poems are quite simply a joy to read. I purchased this book over a year ago and have been reading it to my daughter while encouraging her to use her potty on a regular basis since then. She absolutely loves it and if i am having trouble convincing her to sit on the pot then this book always helps convince her. Unfortunately it has not helped to speed up the training process as she has just turned 3 and is still holding in her wee and poo until she is back in knickers or her nappy. If i leave her bare she eventually just wees or poos on the floor. This book has made it easy for me to explain what to do and my daughter loves repeating bits back to me and will quite happily sit and look at the pictures on her own. I guess she will do it when she is ready and not before ;o)

I remember reading 'Danny' during a time when I was off school some 20 odd years ago and am now reading it to my own children. Danny's dad seemed so cool and their life, which was so different to my own, seemed an absolute idyll. Despite having this escapist dream back then I am hoping my kids get out of it what I did and coming back to it after all of these years I think I can really rate it as a timeless classic.

I am a teacher of 7 year olds and have found that this is the most wonderful book for giving children new views on the world, exploring the idea of timezones and on a topic (soccer) which is popular world over. The children found it so exciting to believe that while they were sleeping, somewhere else in the world, someone is practising soccer against a wall in a town or on the beach, for example. It gives them a greater perspective of the world we live in, as you can see so many different cultures, countries and races represented. It's more a book for discussion with your child or to teach from, rather than a book for a young child to read alone. I highly recommend it!

I own this book in a collection of other titles by Lauren Child (The three original Charlie and Lola books, Hubert Horatio, That Pesky Rat etc) and it's equally as charming as any other Lauren Child picture book. Clarice Bean is a sassy and confident schoolgirl who dreams of a room of her own. In this delightful debut, she introduces us to herself, her family and her noisy, nosy and trouble-making neighbour Robert Granger. The part where her younger brother barges in is not as annoying as suggested, it is just funny enough. I find some parts of the book teen oriented, particularly the parts where Clarice takes a sneek peek in her older sister Marcie's room and her parents talking outside her big brother Kurt's room. I have two older children that i read these books to when they were younger and thay loved them very much I know have another child who is 5 and I have just started reading the percy books and she is loving finding out how percy helps his animal friends when thay are in trouble these are great books

Bought this book for my pre-school group, the ladybird is not only bad tempered but wants to fight every creature he mets. I don't want to promote fighting or violence so this book has only been read twice.I was very disapointed because other eric carle book are Fab.
