I enjoyed this book because it stands the test of time and is still easy to read after 250 years! It is a satire on provincial politics, following the adventures of a country parson called Mr primrose. Although he is conceited and exasperatingly optimistic through awful experiences, Goldsmith can't resist finishing it off like a fairy-tale. Amusing, simple-yet-stimulating, and some impressive vocabulary. Someone who knows about political and social history would recognise its nuances. But it's an amusing read even if you don't.

I recently bought Usborne Books' "French for Beginners Pack" and feel I have to complain about the CD quality.

Although the book and the flashcards are really good - the CD is a disappointment for three important reasons:

1) The English voice is much louder than the French Voice - even with the volume up it is hard to focus on the French speakers (the French should be dominant to help the learning process)

2) For some reason the English translation of each phrase comes after the French - that in itself means you are not thinking about the meaning when you hear the French - it would be better to give the English first and then the French

3) Furthermore the delay between the French and its English ... Read More:

This griping book by Enid Blyton is yet another excellent story for anyone who enjoys a good adventure. The story features four children; Philip,Jack,Lucy-Ann,Dinah and a comical talking parrot Kiki.
In the first story The Island of Adventure the four children are saying at Philip and Dinah's home for the holidays when they fall into an amazing adventure on the mysterious Isle of Gloom.
In The Castle of Aventure the four children are excited by an old castle on the hill but they are no longer excited by it when they fall yet again into a scary and thrilling adventure.
I have read both stories and many more by Enid Blyton and strongly recomend the book.

From the days when they were 'Little Women', it was Jo who has been a central figure in the chronicles of March family. In 'Little Men' it is amazing to see how she has grown and matured in to a woman who resembles Mrs March. Just like Mrs March has been a pillar of strength and beacon of moralities in 'Little Women', here it is Jo, who shows the way to the unique boys.
It is interesting to note that while in 'Little Women' Mr March has been largely absent (which does not detract anything from the book), that in 'Little Men' we can see the different roles Mr Bhaer and Mrs Bhaer play in the nurturing of the boys.

While in this day and age already permeaed with psycho-analysis and various therapeutic and counselling sessions, this ... Read More:

A friend sent this from Australia for my two kids aged 5 and 7. With the original novel being a grown-up classic weighing in at over 500 pages, it's a brave move for Sam Ita to condense it into a pop-up graphic novel just eight pages long.

However, he pulls it off brilliantly. The pop-up engineering is jaw-dropping. We find ourselves looking at it from many different angles to get every last detail. There are flaps to open, a whirlpool to operate (my kids' favourite part), and a 'close-up' of a little book in a character's hand which you can open and marvel at.

Ita has had to condense the language into eight pages, too. I confess to not having read the original, so I can't tell how judicious his editing is, but the story he relates is ... Read More:

Timeless and simply beautiful to read, you can not stop reading it but you can put it down and pick it up again. I don't usually read books twice but I will this one. Living in the west country you can identify with the places and loose yourself in them. This book should be one every country lovers book shelf.

I loved the Secret Seven series when I was younger. I used to save up all my pocket money to buy them and eventually I had all of them. If you're part of a brother/sister relationship and you don't always get on, read about Susie and Jack as they squabble. It's great fun.

I'd recommend the Secret Seven to all kids of all ages. They were always full of adventure and made me wish that where I lived would be more adventurous. Terrific books to capture the imagination.

I have just brought Milne's exquisite book for my daughter's sixth birthday as my father did for me and his father for him and she has already fallen in love with King John, the Good and Bad Bears and Shepherd's ever delightful illustrations and enjoys reading the classic poems to her array of bedtime toys as much as hearing them herself. These are not just cutes rhymes for those too young to have learnt discernment, Milne is a genius when it comes to choice of topic - as appealing to children now as it was four generations ago - and of using the essential 3R's of any classic for young children: repetition, rhythm and rhyme.

That other essential element required to male a child's book "classic" - that adults must enjoy reading it themselves - is also ... Read More:
