Lands that exist beyond the clouds at the top of the tree which some are good and some rather confusing and some plain dreadful. I like most of the Lands and characters like the angry pixie, Mr Watizname and Dame Washalot. The characters are funny and some of the lands are very exciting like the land of snow and ice where there are evil snowman and even Santa Claus.

The novel brings you the ages old question of fate and free will and he left it on the reader to decide if they really are free in this world to live the life as they want to. An excellent novel that still can be related to the situation of women in today's society. We believe that women is now independent and liberated from the burdens of social nomrs and is now living according to her free will. But is it really true? Read the novel and you will realize how wrong you are if you think like this, you will be reminded of many women that you personally know who were exploited by someone in the same manner. ... Not our best buy really. Pictures are ok but very busy and not easy for small children. The holes don't work with this story. There are better buys out there so perhaps take another look before committing to this one.

My favourite childhood book - I read it countless times. This book seems to sum up what the school Summer holidays were all about when I was youngster, playing outside and having adventures (even though mine didn't include rubbish dumps or cavemen!). Perhaps Clive King's masterpiece might seem a little dated to the modern child but I believe the relationship between Barney & Stig that lies at the heart of the book will still captivate new readers. The simple pen and ink illustrations are little gems that complement the written text beautifully. If you want to encourage an under 10 year old to read for pleasure then I would recommend introducing him or her to Stig of the Dump.

Roald Dahl's voice is a delight. A refreshing change from the modern obsession for sound effects and other over-the-top techniques that, apparently, are added to capture a child's attention. My two children listen to Dahl's audio CDs and read his books constantly. They enjoy many other styles of reading and story telling but I do believe Dahl has a special place in their hearts - and mine!

So this is where the nursery rhyme came from! Thus starts this well known and beloved tale as young Mary Lennox, raised in India by indifferent parents, is a most spoiled and disagreeable child. After she is orphaned she is sent to live with her recluse uncle Archibald Craven in a large mysterious mansion set amidst the dark moors of England. This story is too well known and beloved by all to rehash the plot all over again. Suffice it to say that this was a lovely tale of two bitter and unhappy young children who were able to find the "secret gardens" within themselves and used that magic to heal their tortured souls, and become healthy, happy children. Anyone who would say this book could only be enjoyed by children are utterly wrong. I'm not a child and i thought it was a beautifully written and inspiring story. It tells the tale of the little prince who wishes to explore another planet as he has always lived on his own (apart from his friend the rose). I won't go into the plot too much because to be honest it was a while ago that i read it and i wouldn't want to get it wrong, but one chapter in particular that i remember being quite touching is when the little prince talks about his friendship with a fox. The book is almost poetic, and at times i found it quite sad, but i would reccommend it to anyone, no matter what age.

This is a spine-tingling (not necessarily in a good way!) long short story with hauntingly gothic imagery that shifts and stirs beneath a prosaic surface. The female protagonist is confined to her room as a 'rest cure' which might be associated with what we now recognise as post-natal depression, but the enforced 'rest' that is more akin to imprisonment releases something in her psyche that might be madness... The yellow wallpaper of the title is both a kind of fairy-tale mirror and a window to another world that allows the narrator to see the female figures caught beneath it and living out their lives beneath its shadows, an incredibly haunting and indicting imagery for Victorian England. I started this book with high hopes; i had read the reviews here and was convinced that i had an enjoyable read before me (many have even stated that it is the greatest book ever written). In fact, i found it dull and tedious; every chapter has a minor event in it, ending in a patronising moral. I ended up skimming the book and giving it to charity. The worst book i've read in a while.

Well that says it all really. A fair chunk of the book provides a fascinating commentary and background to the author which deeply enrich the stories. I didn't read the story as a child - I gain far more from it as an adult. Its entrancing and an excellent, whimsical escape from the bothers of the day.
