I lose track of age suitability for books for my grandcildren especially as they are in Australia, and other children I buy for, so the mention of ages in other reviews helped me with age suitability.

This is a spine-tingling (not necessarily in a good way!) long short story with hauntingly gothic imagery that shifts and stirs beneath a prosaic surface.

The female protagonist is confined to her room as a 'rest cure' which might be associated with what we now recognise as post-natal depression, but the enforced 'rest' that is more akin to imprisonment releases something in her psyche that might be madness...

The yellow wallpaper of the title is both a kind of fairy-tale mirror and a window to another world that allows the narrator to see the female figures caught beneath it and living out their lives beneath its shadows, an incredibly haunting and indicting imagery for Victorian England.

I introduced my seven year old Grandson to Enid Blyton and he can't get enough of her books. He is a Californian who is now living in France so has no knowledge of England at any time. He doesn't care he loves the stories. They are not old fashioned to him they are just good tales. With CD's he can listen at any time instead of having to wait for bedtime for us to read to him.

Hardy examines the difficulties in the life of a women and explores the inner feelings of Tess during the events that happened to her. The novel brings you the ages old question of fate and free will and he left it on the reader to decide if they really are free in this world to live the life as they want to.

An excellent novel that still can be related to the situation of women in today's society. We believe that women is now independent and liberated from the burdens of social nomrs and is now living according to her free will. But is it really true? Read the novel and you will realize how wrong you are if you think like this, you will be reminded of many women that you personally know who were exploited by someone in the same ... Read More:

Well that says it all really. A fair chunk of the book provides a fascinating commentary and background to the author which deeply enrich the stories. I didn't read the story as a child - I gain far more from it as an adult. Its entrancing and an excellent, whimsical escape from the bothers of the day.

This book is a real treat for any Thomas fan in the little tank engine's 60th anniversary year. With a real cloth jacket in classic blue, silver gilding and embossing on the dust jacket. The captions inside are a nice touch too. Perfect for a christening or special birthday gift - I hope my godson will like it when a bit older!! This is limited edition too, so should prove highly collectible.

I love this book. Our headmaster often used to read passages from it in morning assemley decades ago, and it stayed with me since then. The language is beautifully eloquent, and the author gives us a wonderfully realistic look into country life all that time ago. I especially loved the chapter about his mother, describing her with such honesty but love too, that I felt I'd known her myself. This weekend read was better than a weekend break in the country !

I have just re-read Alice Wonderland; last time I read it I was a teen & loved it, now, I just found it annoying, especially Lewis carroll's writing style, very childlike, (perhaps he was aiming for that)?
I agree with previous reviews that the Mock Turtle is the best character in the book with some very cleve lines, but this didn't outweigh how much I wanted to strangle Alice by the end of the book!

'The Merchant's Tale' is one of many of 'The Canterbury Tales'. Not only does it fit in well with the overall pilgrimage that Chaucer is relaying, but it is also stands well as a book alone. The story of Januarie and his hunt for the perfect wife is told in such an intricate and complex way, that it has a variety of interpretations. There are many arguments, for example relating to who is speaking in the marriage encomium at the beginning - is it Januarie, or the Merchant? The strong use of comic effects, especially satire, also make the book more accessable on a wider spectrum of levels. The interweaving levels of thought, coming from Januarie, the Merchant and Chaucer, leave the book very open to individual interpretation and a wide maze of enlightening discussions
