This is an absolute corker of a story. Appealing to both boys and girls in equal measure (the Gaskitt family have twin boy and girl) this is a perfect mix of picture book and paperback to seamlessly slide the child who rejects back-and-white paperbacks into longer chapter stories without them realising. This book is different, as Ahlberg so often is, and it's like a starter detective story for the young child: what is that suspicious man doing with the pram, and what has happened to the missing animals and why is Mrs Gaskitt always in bed, eating odd things? The whole book is choc full of colourful interesting pictures, amusing illustrated maps, diagrams/coincidences/humorous asides that keep both parent and a sofaful-of-children entertained ... Anyone else annoyed at the fact that Nami was the only member of Luffy's current crew whose roots weren't thoroughly explained? Then this volume is perfect for you; it changes EVERYTHING, and reveals to us the dark, treacherous roots of Nami's personality and being. Meet 'Bellemere', watch Usopp fall before Nami, and be moved by this graphic novel as it unfolds another segment of the grand tale that is the beloved ONE PIECE.

Now I just need to wait for April...

Owly must be the cutest comic character ever created. Those huuuuuuuuge, mournful eyes will make even the coldest heart melt.

Owly is a friendly but lonely owl. He has a huge heart, and will do anything to help anyone. There are no words - even when the characters communicate, they do so via little pictures in speech bubbles. I thought this would make the stories a bit boring or shallow, but I was wrong: it makes them even more affecting. This is probably now my favourite comic book, and I own a fair few (James Kochalka, Craig Thompson etc.) I was close to tears at the end of the first story - it IS that good.

September 09, 2004
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Children & Baby Books : Asterix and the Cauldron (Asterix (Orion Hardcover))
The best Asterix book.

Forced to leave their village and enter the Roman world, Asterix and Obelix find out just how insane 'civilisation' really is. What we have, at the risk of sounding over-analytical, is as brilliant a satire of modern life as ever there was, from the decadent world of avante-guade theatre to the tax-collector who speaks only in the manner of a multiple-choice questionaire. You will never sit through a pretentious play again without hearing "Orgies! Orgies! We want Orgies!"
