Every time we depict unnecessary interventions in the childbearing process as routine eg in this case ultrasound scanning and leaving the home environment to give birth we are laying down a legacy which will cause trouble for our children. It could be argued that these are a common feature of many young children's experience - and so indeed they are. This book is good although one of the touch bits is sandpaper which I personally dont think is right for a baby book. I personally prefer the goldilocks one in the series which is why I bought this one.

Lots of these newer Charlie and Lola books are spin offs from the television series, and aren't written by Lauren Child at all. Sometimes this doesn't matter, as the series and the books do try to stay as close to the original books as possible, and with good reason, they work. This one, to me, is not quite on the money. Child is very playful and cheeky with her stories. It's always clear that Charlie and Lola are good kids who are kind to each other, despite the mischief they get into, but in this book the moral is rather laboured, and it's alarmingly thin on the amusement front. Since infants are more aware of contrast than color in the beginning, I 'read' this book with my daughter from the time she was four months old through about her first year. Cover to cover, I read the words (title and book description, which almost hypnotically became part of the experience!) and described the pictures, sometimes tracing them with a finger. Our interaction with the small book was cuddly and verbal, as the images served as guides. She had her favorites, and the book is well-worn, chewed in places. It was a daily gentle activity, holding her interest, obviously delighting and stimulating, and paved the way for more and more books. I remember reading this book to my children,when they were small, they enjoyed listening to the story,they read it, over and over again, when they could read it themselves. The reason I have been looking for the book is, I mentioned to my grandchildren that my wash basket was like the magic porridge pot every time I emptied it the next time I looked again it was full and I have been looking for the book ever since, so I could read it to them. I mentioned it to my sister and asked where I could by it from and she put me on to Amazon.
