Usborne books can usually be relied upon to deliver, but this one is a little disappointing. It is sold as a book for children who are beginning to read on their own, andthe language is appropriate, but the amount of text could be off-putting to an absolute beginner. Most of our favourit dinosaurs are there, as well as many less well-known ones. Illustrations are a bit fanciful - Apatosaurus with purple, blue and green markings; Allosaurus with "go faster" stripes and Stegosaurus with a "sunburst" underbelly. The book rightly points out that no-one really knows what colour they were, so the illustrations might be correct. This revision guide summarises clearly and concisely all the science you need up to and including Year 9, with sections on Life Processes, Materials and Physical Processes. And it's great for learning because it explains everything in an entertaining and accessible format (check out the cold polar bear and the elephant in stilettos!). Our children have worked steadily through it preparing for exams, and the pages are getting dog-eared. Conclusion: a comprehensive and well-written guide to KS3 Science. Wish we'd had books like this when I was at school.

If you haven't got this book and your child is sitting their GCSE Physics, then I highly recomend this book. It's style is witty (if sometimes childish) and it makes the learning of some difficult topics very simple. Compared to the older text books with their reams of text, this book forms a welcome relief. It summarises the facts, and has revision sections in the form of questions and answers. I've used this book to teach physics, and it works very well.
