I agree with other reviewers, this is really quite different from the authors previous books. It isn't as fast paced or colourful. I bought this for my 3 year old niece. She liked it but i don't think it will be read as much as her other Julia Donaldson books. It is a lovely book though.

We had loads of fun with our kids reading this one, but not just at home. They loved it so much they had both memorised it in no time and would love reciting it if ever we went on walks, especially through woods and streams.

This book is about a lion named Leo who didn't fit in with his pride, because he just wanted to look for love and make friends with other animals in the jungle. After he was forced to leave the pride of lions, Leo did his best to help every kind of animal in the jungle, but never asked for a thing. Eventually, he became the king of animals in a different way. The lovely colorful cover of this book will catch your eye in the bookshop. The illustrations are animated and charming as if you were in tropical Africa. From the illustrations page by page, Leo's enthusiasm and kindness are obviously an important part of the whole story. amazing piece of literary genius! I am 36 and think this book is awesome. Interactive, alternative humour and a bulwark against twee storylines. I even introduced it my head of department who was immediately won over (although he bought it for his children instead). On a purely critical level, i consider it to be the more superior of all the "pigeon" offerings; however "don't let the pigeon stay up late" is a worthy contender. The series starts to peter off after this one.

I was disappointed at the small size of the board book - even tiny fingers find it hard to poke through the holes munched by the caterpillar. The little toy is cute, I had thought that he would be able to 'eat his way through the holes in the pages', but as stated above the book is too small. Having said that , The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic enjoyed by my children 20 years ago and still popular today.

I love Julia Donaldson's books because they entertain the adult as well as the child. They hold us spellbound on the settee as we revel in the rhymes and sway with the rhythms. My five year old boy loves Tyrannosauruses and my 4 year old girl likes the families of dinosaurs and the tiny egg-carrying Compognathus. Even when I'm tired, I feel better after reading one of JD's masterpieces aloud, and the little ones go to bed content because there's always a happy ending.

After reading the reviews I thought let me give it a try. My three year old and 23mth old boys both love it! They love the rhymes and the different types of dogs. My three yr old can even tell you the next rhyming word after only a wk reading the stories to them. Its a bed-time treat. I would reccomend it to anyone with babies and toddlers. Its absolutely adorable! I plan to purchase more from this series for my kids later on.

I introduced my daughter to this book a month ago when she was 9 months old, and it is by far her favourite book. She crawls over to it and lobs other books out of the way to get to it, and then happily sits turning the pages and opening and closing the flaps, she can't get enough of it no matter what time of day it is, although we also read it every night before bed as well. We've had to buy a second copy as I know she's going to tear something soon, but to date it has withstood her vigorous opening/closing/page turning! I would highly recommend it.

This is a charming and entertaining entry in the 'Charlie and Lola' series, and one which has particular significance for preschool-age children in the run-up to starting at 'big school'. I first bought a copy of this title in 2005, when one of the preschoolers I work with was showing significant signs of distress about starting school. She really related to the story - which helped her to deal with her anxiety about the transition. The story has been a big hit with subsequent 'generations' of nursery children, as Lola's doubts and fears reflect those of many school starters. I've never given a bad review, however out of all the books my 3 year old has this has got to be the worst....yes the pictures are good - but the use of the word 'bad baby' doesnt sit with me well....Why are we saying the baby was 'bad'? Because he didnt say thank you or pay? I really think there are lots of books out there for children which make better use of the English language than this one...bad baby - it's awful!
