This is a good read for children and adults. Lots of excellent poems, several made me laugh out loud and is a favourite book of my 3 year old granddaughter when she comes to visit.

This is my two-year-old daughter's favourite book. It takes the form of a poem about a child walking through the jungle and shows the different animals he sees and the noises they make. To an adult the words will seem repetitive but that is what appeals to a young child. If you want a good book to read to your child, this could be the one.

Melancholy now, to glance down this list of Causley's books: his rebranding as A Children's Poet. This is the only full collection which resembles the books of poems as they appeared (including many of the brilliant poems from the 1980s) and is a truly marvellous body of work. By contrast, the Picador collections are thematically arranged and targeted for school children, following the fate of equally strange (and deeply unfashionable) writers like Walter de la Mere back in the 1930s. When I bought this book I intended on using it to share with my primary class. As a trainee teacher it was a recomended poetry book. However, when I bought it I found I enjoyed it myself. Some comment was made that the poems weren't all suitable for children. I don't necessarily agree with that. However, some of the poems are more "sophisticated" than others. An good, light read.

I used to read Shirley Hughes' books when I was a child and loved the intricate details in the drawing. She has an amazing knack for making the real world of a child come to life. I thought they would be dated now, because this is not the childhood most people have any more, but my children love them just the same. This book takes you on a journey through the year in simple, evocative poems and wonderful illustrations. My kids love to find 'themselves' in the pictures and always ask me which one I am. They particularly love the seaside and bonfire night pictures, and the poem about the fire being like a dangerous dragon. It's a wonderful book and makes me nostalgic for my own childhood, when this was all real to me.

I used this for school and it wasn't bad at all. I mean, one could say that when you are making a book of poetry for school exam purposes you could just bung all of the relevant poems together and let the kids get on with trying to understand them. But for the first time, I found that this didn't happen, and I recieved useful information about the poets' histories and inspiration which really aided my interpretation of the poems. There were also illustrations on each page, which had been chosen out of war art etc. so that they were linked with the subject of the poem, and were interesting in themselves. A good poetry book containg many well known poems. Divided up well into categories. Very well chosen poems, with no bad ones.

A touch of the unexpected and outrageous in many of these rhymes make them a great gift for anyone with a touch of mischief inside them, however deep it may be buried. When I was 13 I would read them out to mates at school. Everyone loved it, even the teachers. Back home, my dad sat in a corner chuckling through them too. Fun for everyone except the hyper-critical and grumpy.
