Isn't it amazing what TV and a whole bucket load of hype can do. This guy would not get a part in an amateur production of Gilbert & Sullivan!Of course it's all a question of "the kings new clothes",if we criticise him we don't have a heart/cannot hear how well he sings, or just don't appreciate talent.(Where is it?) Well, Mr Potts sings off key(often)and when he finds the key he continues by singing flat. Make the best of it Mr Potts because the fickle world of "popular" music will soon tire of you,and when they do they will tear you to pieces, as they discover the fabrication that has been passed off as talent. Talent cannot be invented,as has Paul Potts,it comes naturally;and this voice is decidely unatural.

This version of The Planets has replaced my recent LSO version. Why? Well, the balance between the contributing elements is the best i've heard so far: The bass is thunderous analogue and the high woodwind/strings are like crystal in equal measure. This is a superb achievement and exceptionally important for, 'large orchestra' where Dynamics become a recording engineer's delight or problem depending on how good they are. And these people are the best: Abbey road have done a fantastic job on the remastering of a late 70's classic, although there is one thing they could never tackle: Is this as Holst intended? There are now many releases in the EMI 'Great Recordings of the Century' series, and this has to be one of the best I've heard. The three pieces on this CD date from the 1960's and all have benefited from recent remastering. The 'Cello Concerto' is a 1965 recording performed by Jacqueline du Pre (who else would you expect?) and remains today, more than 40 years on, the standard to which all other performances of this work are measured. I'm sure I am amongst many others who regret not having seen such a gifted musician play live. I've seen several performances of Elgar's cello concerto, and always find that the best are when the soloist totally immerses him/herself into the music and brings out the emotions from somewhere deep within themselves. ... This recording is simply superb. What some of the reviews seem to forget is that this is a recording of the music, not the musical. And in this sense, to my mind at least, the performers' accents are irrelevant. What matters is the fact that this recording brings together a group of some of the most talented singers of the time, and boy does it show. The luscious soprano voice of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is, as always, simply superb, as is the rich tenor sound of José Carreras; these are complemented nicely by Troyanos' mezzo and Ollmann's baritone voices. The orchestra, featuring Miles Davis on trumpet, is similarly exceptional - their prowess and cohesion is demonstrated particularly in tracks such as "Jump". I'm surprised by the number of reviewers who criticise Katherine because she has not performed in opera and then compare her unfavourably with leading opera singers. Nowhere on this CD (or any of her CDs and DVDs) is she described as an opera singer and her recordings do not claim to be opera. Her recordings do include some arias from opera (though not here) and these are sung very well, but she also includes Welsh songs,(again sadly none on this disc), hyms, songs from musicals and other works. This variety increases that buyers might not like every track. I bought this CD because it contains 'Samcta Maria' set to the music of the Intermezzo from Mascagmi's Cacalleria Rusticana' 'Be Still My Soul' the hymn set to the main theme from Finlandia by Sibelius and 'Somewhere' from West Side Story. ... I love piano music and after hearing one of the tracks on Classic FM was determined to buy a copy of this CD. I was looking forward to listening to it but after the first three tracks I started to feel disappointed. Einaudi is best listened to in isolation - ie on Classic FM. An entire CD of his is pretty boring and rather depressing to be honest. There is little differentiation from one song to the next: most are solemn, ponderous, many are written in 3/4 time giving the impression of a long waltz. I think hearing a track on the radio amongst other music does Einaudi's music more justice but he needs to vary the tone, the rhythm, and the mood of his pieces more, in my opinion, to be considered a composer of any real worth or value. EMI's new 30-disc box-set is one of the truly outstanding contributions to Vaughan Williams' 50th anniversary celebrations. In one collection listeners now have virtually his entire output in recordings ranging from the very good to the exceptional: this set is a tribute of EMI's long-standing commitment to British music (now sadly curtailed). Vernon Handley's magisterial cycle of the symphonies is beautifully played and recorded, and the major choral works and operas are all presented in excellent performances and recordings. I would guess that the Amazon reviewer Warwick Thompson is under 25. Anyway, he writes as if he is, judging by his use of the English language ("think Goldfinger", eeeeeeeeh!). He also believes that L'Homme Armee is 16th century. Oh dear. I find the reviews of the actual buyers much more to the point, wheher positive or negative. Pity that the text of the Amazon reviewer is displayed at the top. OK?
