This is a superb buy!
Callas is in stronger voice here than in the 1959 remake, with brilliant highnotes. This recording is the first of the opera sets Callas made with EMI. She is caught in very good voice. Tagliavini would take the role of Edguardo in 1959, but here is the greatest Edguardo of them all, Giuseppe di Stefano. Tito Gobbi is very memorable as Enrico also. The sound is good, similar to the famous Tosca with De Sabata.
This is the best budget Lucia.

Don Giovanni is perhaps the greatest opera of all and has been very lucky on disc with many fine recordings. This one, however, just about tops the lot. It has Guilini and the Philamonia at the top of their game, a simply wonderful cast with Wachter as the most demonic Don on record, and Legge's superb production. The recording still sounds well though not quite up to the latest digital standards, of course. But it is one of Legge's best. Just listen to the climax with chords thundering and Frick's sepulchral bass summoning Giovanni to hell. If the hairs don't rise on your neck then you can demand your money back!
For a refreshing alternative try Jacobs (HM) but all round this one is the tops.

I wholeheartedly disagree with some of the reviewers who claim that Glass has provided the perfect setting for Cohen's later poetry. For one, Cohen on paper is not as great a poet as he is in song. In fact, his later poetry harks back a good deal to the poetry of the beats (Kerouac, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, etc) and is comparable to a great degree to the late, great Charles Bukowski, but not as good, in my opinion. The difference being that Bukowski had no choice but to immerse himself in a squalid existence, and write, as it were, inside the belly of the whale. Cohen, on the other hand, has always exuded real class, and he has a much higher-minded side to his character, so that i.e. in 'The Energy Of Slaves' when he writes of Valentina, that "I loved ... Heard it a couple of times. Probably the best recording by this orchestra. Goes to show, Colin Davis isn't the last (or first word) in Berlioz conducting. You would have thought a popular piece like this would be a dead cert for a live record, but this was made in Karajan's old haunt, the Jesus-Christus Kirche. I guess you can't rely on an audience to shut up during the quiet third movement.

The Death of Cleopatra is particularly powerful. I still complain about EMI's Rattle-centred cover and booklet photos. What does his face have to do with the music? The choice is to arbitrary, why not use his wife's image instead? At least give us a photo of the man at work.

I am constantly playing this in the car because I love it so much, other recordings are good but this is just a little bit different, in the Allegro movement of Spring if you listen to the bit before the whole violin and viola section thunders it's way to the tumultuous tweeting solo, you will notice that Nigel bow's 4 times in quick succession instead of the usual 2, the cadenza allows for this and Nigel exploited it with typical panache. It's good to see him back in the limelight once more with his new recording, now lives in Krakow with his Polish missus.

Sorry, this might upset some other reviewers and 'purists' but I have to say as good as this recording is, and it is, callas does give a good performance, but it doesn't light a candle to the 1962 Karajan recording on decca legends with Leontyne price as Tosca she is absolutely stunning in the role, I defy anyone not to be moved and have the hairs go up on the back of their neck when they listen to her vissi d'arte(my ultimate favourite opera aria), so do yourself a favour and get that cd now! You won't regret it.

I have just listened to the cd and it is fantastic. It doesn't matter if you are a "python" lover or not. Fantastic song writing, arrangements, great vocal performances and the production on this cd is first class. Tim Curry is as always delivering a great vocal performance, as are the rest of the cast. It is brilliant. Buy it, you wont be dissapointed!

Living in Oman/ Arabia, working in Abu Dhabi & Dubai/ U.A. Emirates and travelling for business reasons all over the Gulf region and the Middle East I like to discuss with my Arabian friends and customers about the world most famous opera singers and most popular popmusic singers of both cultures - the Western (European & North American) and the Oriental culture.

We enjoy to listen to the best opera singers in Europe and in the Middle East. I was astonished to find CDs with music of Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti in the homes of my Arabian friends - no wonder, many of them studied in their youth in the U.S. or in U.K.! My friends in Arabia deeply admire and truly appreciate CARRERAS, DOMINGO and PAVAROTTI !
