I bought this as a gift for my niece, since I wanted her to be educated about classical music as she was on her way to college. Ended up buying two copies as I found I loved it so much. Normally I like to pick and choose my orchestras, composers, and conductors, but this collection has jujst about everything. Also, I'd never bought some of the more "popular" items (Strauss and Grieg) as I'd heard them a million times, but now I have them and the performances are all great. This truly has a smattering of it all, and if you're not a classical music lover, it's bound to turn you on to the stuff.

The orchestral playing on this disc is top-notch, but it is unfortunately let down by bland and uninspiring pianism. It's not that Previn's playing is too subtle for my tastes; he is just poor: neither imaginative nor passionate, yet not sensitive and controlled either, and with a less-than-perfect technique (not that that is necessarily a criticism per se).

This CD had many good tracks, but it is the "Adagio For Strings" that really stands out. Other tracks of note are "Hello, I Love You" by The Doors and "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. These songs capture the atmosphere of Vietnam as well as the film did. If you like any Vietnam films or just great music you'll love this.

I agree wholeheartedly with the review by J.J.Rhodes, but feel I should make the point that the whole set is recorded in full glorious MONO! Once you have got over the shock of the sound stage collapsing into a point source however, the music really is delightful, and takes me back to the days when I used to pay 9d to sit up in the gods at the Golders Green Hippodrome to hear the D'Oyly Carte company sing their way through all those charming numbers. This set has a distinctly dated feel about it, and makes one realise just how much performing styles, as well as recording techniques, have changed in half a century (and some of the artists were clearly chosen for their ability to act rather than their ability to sing!). This album might not viewed differently by classical music enthusiasts but for a middle-roader like me, it was great. I bought it before my exams and instead of my usual dead silence studying technique, i had this playing in the background. It is very beautiful music and David is obviously well-gifted. I think i will go ahead and get his earlier stuff. Relating to the tracks, I can never get bored of any 'Carmen' version, Maria Callas et al, so I obviously loved his take on it. Also the track 'Nothing else matters' simply blew me away and I wish it lasted longer. The Paganini Rhapsody is also another winner. definitely 5 stars for me.

When you hear this album, you cannot help but be taken in by its hypnotic building and sequencing of sounds upon and around one another. You also cannot help but notice how much an absolute myriad of artists that have emerged over the last 30 years are in debt to Reich. From, as other reviews have stated, Eno to Aphex to almost any innovative electronic musician - parallels can be drawn to Reich. A lot of jazz fans will also find huge rewards here. The riffing on a theme that Reich works to perfection is the essence of jazz, be it more traditional work or more avant garde artists, such as Deathprod and Nils Petter Molvaer. This has become my very favourite piece of music (among let's say appr. 2000 cds). Pity that so few of Rimsky-Korsakoff's works are available as recordings.

Underneath a smug, slightly bland exterior, Sky was a musically very gifted and competent group. They played a sort of acceptable rock, combined with some dreadful cover versions of classical pieces, and wrapped this up in unimaginatively titled albums, complete with some of the worst liner notes you'll read anywhere. Anthology is a good resume of what they were about - from the awkward, mathematical scurrying compositions of Francis Monkman, to the lighter touch of Steve Gray's material, through to inevitable decline when John Williams called it a day and left.
