Of course you'll find better renditions of this or that sonata played by other people. I think I'd rather have Christoph Eschenbach's recording of those staring-God-in-the-face last four sonatas #30-#32 (Beethoven - Piano Sonatas Nos 29-32), for example. But as a complete set, as an all-round summation of the Beethoven sonatas, will you find anything better than this?

I've owned this set for about a year now and hardly a day goes by when I don't listen to at least one of the 32 sonatas played by Maestro Barenboim. Another favourite activity of mine is listening to the entire 32-sonata set, one per day, for a month. Divide the month's pleasure you'll get by the price of these CDs and--I think you'll agree--this is an utterly amazing ... Read More:

Adrian Johnston is best known for his collaborations with film maker Stephen Poliakoff, one of his most haunting recordings was for Poliakoff's The Lost Prince and is worth searching out if you can.

This film of Brideshead, did not live up to audience expectations. The score however is lovely to listen too. Yet as with the film I felt something was missing. The only comparison I can make is to Stephen Fry's film Bright Young Things (Vile Bodies) which held all the melodrama and satire we know from Waugh's books and naturally hearing that Brideshead was to be made into a film audiences were expecting something similar. This version of Brideshead is not imaginative enough or even witty enough to live up to Waugh's novel and the soundtrack to ... Read More:

The two works on this disc are essential listening for anyone with even the slightest interest in Steve Reich. For those who don't know the composer, there are perhaps easier places to start - the Music for Mallet Instruments, Octet, Music for 18 Musicians, for instance.

It's now nearly 20 years since these pieces were recorded. Different Trains juxtaposes the Kronos Quartet with taped railway announcements, words overheard on trains, lines relating to train journeys etc. Throughout, there's a true integration of the form, since the strings pick up rhythmic and melodic lines from the spoken words, develop them, amplify them.

Electric Counterpoint is performed on an electric guitar. Pat Metheney plays against pre-recorded tapes to ... Read More:

This is such a beautiful recording. Alfred Brendel is the best pianist in my opinion and he once again interpreted these pieces extremely well. It's truly relaxing to listen to this CD.

I haven't heard the CD yet, but I was at the concert where it was recorded. If this CD captures even one percent of the energy, the emotion and the fury that Ms DiDonato displayed at this outstanding concert, this CD is a must-have, especially if you're into Händel. Amazing.

I first heard 'The Banks of Green Willow' as incidental music to a BCC 'Lorna Doone' in the 1960s and wrote to the BBC to find out what this achingly beautiful piece was. 'A Shropshire Lad' is even better. The poignancy is intensified when you know that Butterworth (the dedicatee of Vaughan Williams' 'London' Symphony) died in the First World War. 'Tintagel' is grand and imposing, echoing Arthurian legend and the beat of waves round the ancient castle. This collection is absolutely authoritative, conducted by the best of all conductors of English music and wonderful value at its low price. No-one who is interested should hesitate.

Henry Purcell's (1659-1695) opera "Dido and Aeneas" tells, in approximately one hour, of the frustrated passion of Dido, queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, whose destiny it is to found Rome. The opera is based upon Virgil's Aeneid with a highly compressed libretto by Nahum Tate. Purcell's opera includes three parts for women and only one, Aeneas, for a male. The brief opera is in three Acts. According to "The New Grove Book of Operas", Purcell based his work on an earlier English opera, "Venus and Adonis" by John Blow. With its heavy emphasis on dance and chorus, "Dido and Aeneas" also draws heavily on French baroque opera.

This reissue of a 1961 recording of a young Janet Baker in the role of Dido is an outstanding way to get to know Purcell's ... Read More:

And so Mr Maxwell Davies' broad-reaching cycle of Naxos Quartets comes to an end, and one has to say that anyone's will be a mixed response. There are certain points in this whole cycle that stand out, and the first two movements of the 9th (and the 9th generally) are such points. The work is based on Maxwell Davies' memories of WW2, and not only manages to convincingly convey violence, despair and solitude (it is usually very hard to say that Maxwell Davies conveys ANY emotions convincingly), but also manages to make it very affecting - consider the ending of the second movement, beginning at the violin harmonic at 9.26 - it's passages like this that make this cycle worth the effort (similarly sterling passages are the last movement of the 2nd quartet, and the `In Nomine' ... This recording was my first: it was so perfect that I had to buy more and hear more, so I owe a lot to this. I suppose I also owe a lot to the Honda advert that introduced me to it...

It is an astonishing text, and the variety of movements created by Pergolesi are beautifully crafted in performance here. Kirkby and Bowman, carefully supported by the Academy of Ancient Music, wring out the very emotional core of the music. The image of the Virgin at the bottom of the Cross could not be made more real, and the anguish, torment and pain born by the mother are truly brought to life.

Stop reading this and buy it.
