One might have thought that the Ballet suites have been recorded too many times, for anyone to get excited about 'another' recording! In truth these are fabulous performances, with inner detail that I have to say I haven't heard in any other recordings! At an incredibly low price, I urge anyone thinking of buying a recording of the suites to look no further. A superb cellist and wonderful conductor, golly how we will miss him!

Three times previously on Amazon I've had the pleasure of giving top marks to the expert accomplishments of Acoustic Triangle for their scintillating music-making. Now I can do so again, but with the wish I could somehow overtop the best of praises. Wonderfully recorded by Bob Whitney, and as always tastefully produced by Malcolm Creese, who also plays the heartbeat bass, this time we have innovation to add to the superior compositional inventions of Tim Garland on reeds and Gwilym Simcock on piano and French horn. If someone was to ask me to go through my music collection and pick out the perfect piece of music, Alina would be it. Neither offensive nor boring or shallow, it's uncomplicated with thought provoking phrasing, holding one's attention time after time without growing tiring. Yes, the tracks are slightly repetitive and the CD only has 2 tracks (albeit varied), but believe me you could stick your player on repeat and have this running for a couple of hours without wanting to change it. What is interesting is that everyone who has heard this CD playing has complemented the music and asked for the details. It's a winner with my wife, who despises at least 90% of my music taste. It even manages to calm my baby down.

Una de las mas maravillosas voces que he escuchado en toda mi vida, este es uno de esos albumes que nunca se olvidan y le llegan a uno al fondo del corazon; Katherine le ha dado un nuevo lugar en el mundo a la musica clasica; temas magnificos como el NESSUM DORMA, grandes baladas como OVER THE RAINBOW, ALL THINGS ARE BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL o AMAZING GRACE, la tonada clasica italiana TORNA SURRIENTO (una excelente competidora de la version de Elvis Presley "Surrender"), en resumen, una preciosa coleccion de bellas melodias de ayer y hoy en una voz que pareciera venir de los ángeles; imprescindible para todo amante de lo clásico y las melodias romanticas.

Perlman is a violonist whose perormance is regarded as standard when it comes to Bach's works; in this album however, I was a bit disappointed of finding what I would expect in that the whole work sounds rather classic than baroque. also, the orchestra seems to be a bit axcited of having Perlman as the violinist (!!?) as you simply can't hear the orchestra as it's always in the background. This gets quite annoying when it comes to question and answer parts between the violin and orchestra or when it's the violin who should be rather in background.. but that's a matter of recording I should think.. but in general,you still, no doubt, can enjoy the perfection of Perlman's performance, if you're not fussy about different interpretations of ... There are now many releases in the EMI 'Great Recordings of the Century' series, and this has to be one of the best I've heard. The three pieces on this CD date from the 1960's and all have benefited from recent remastering. The 'Cello Concerto' is a 1965 recording performed by Jacqueline du Pre (who else would you expect?) and remains today, more than 40 years on, the standard to which all other performances of this work are measured. I'm sure I am amongst many others who regret not having seen such a gifted musician play live. I've seen several performances of Elgar's cello concerto, and always find that the best are when the soloist totally immerses him/herself into the music and brings out the emotions from somewhere deep within themselves. ... As a professional concert pianist for the last thirty years or so, it was a great relief to find that they have released everything you need on 2 CDs. Sure enough, since I bought it I have been able to discard the 1000 or so CDs that I had collected of performers like Cortot, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff and Schnabel (and I now have enough room for a pool table!). They are simply not necessary when you have these two CDs.
