Every time you listen to this CD you will be amazed at the quality of it. Excellent playing from the orchestra under the experienced direction of Davis- he makes the music shine; flexible and powerful playing from the LSO. The recording is surely demonstration quality; you cannot listen to the start of "Mars" - or any other section of the set -and not be amazed by the clarity of the sound.
For the price, this is an excellent set; it remains one of the best even compared to rivals that cost much more.

Russell Watson is not an opera singer but a pop singer who for some reason has made a little talent go a long way and has been quite successful here in the in the uk, due to serval TV shows. If you want to listen to a real tenor try Domingo or good old Pavarotti now these men can sing and have been in many opera's. What opera has Russell Watson been in? On this CD he murders Freddie Mercury and the fab Montserrat Caballe song "Barcelona" .

I currently own recordings of the Bach cello suites by Rostropovich, Casals, Yo-Yo Ma and Fournier and have heard many others. Tortelier's recording is my firm favourite. The pace is just right; slow enough to express feeling, but fast enough to realise the no doubt intended flow to the pieces. Tortelier is completely at one with the Bach Cello Suites in these recordings, and plays them beautifully. Highly recommended.

I have to admit I'd never heard of Howard Goodall before searching on Amazon. I'm a fan of choral music, and for a long time I've had "find Mr. Bean music" on my to-do list.
I was surprised to learn it was by a contemporary composer, and ordered the CD.

It's quite a revelation; each piece is thoughtful, deep, and quietly masterful. I love choral, but I prefer Renaissance to contemporary. In just 24 hours, however, this recording has changed all that; a beautiful collection of pieces - I'd put this album right at the top of my favourites list.

So far my favourite is 'Palm 23' - I've never actually watched 'The Vicar of Dibley', so I don't to have to disassociate the music from a TV show. It's sublime, sheer comfort; a real indulgence, ... Read More:

This 2007 single CD release is a compilation of opera's best known arias performed by one of our generations most popular and successful tenors.

None of the recordings are particularly new, ranging from the 1973 version of 'Nessun Dorma' (long before the Three Tenors era) to slightly newer releases like the 1989 'Live like Horses' duet with Elton John.

In between these two are all the favourites like Verdi's 'Brindisi' and 'La Donna e Mobile', and of course Lara's 'Granada'.

Whether this is, or if in fact any 1 CD of just one hour of music could be, the ultimate Pavarotti collection I'm not certain, for there are several other such titled releases available (most notable being Decca's 2 disc compilation which guests ... Read More:

This performance of Rachmaninov's second symphony made quite a stir when it was released on vinyl back in 1973 and although that may seem like a generation ago (because it is, sadly!), this newly (1999) re-mastered version succeeds in recapturing the excitement which its original release created. Prior to this recording, Previn and the LSO had toured with the symphony to Russia, where the unexpurgated version had not been heard for years, and it caused a sensation. Listening to this recording, it is not hard to understand why. This is unashamedly beautiful and lyrical music, played by an orchestra and conductor who had no misgivings about whether the music was fashionable or not, and given its full measure of feeling, with great drama and passion. In its newly ... Read More:

I first heard 'The Banks of Green Willow' as incidental music to a BCC 'Lorna Doone' in the 1960s and wrote to the BBC to find out what this achingly beautiful piece was. 'A Shropshire Lad' is even better. The poignancy is intensified when you know that Butterworth (the dedicatee of Vaughan Williams' 'London' Symphony) died in the First World War. 'Tintagel' is grand and imposing, echoing Arthurian legend and the beat of waves round the ancient castle. This collection is absolutely authoritative, conducted by the best of all conductors of English music and wonderful value at its low price. No-one who is interested should hesitate.

This three-CD set is built around three of the biggest sonatas - the Pathetique, the Waldstein, and the Hammerklavier. I'm not a pianist, but I do know these pieces very well from many different performers (Brendel, Barenboim, Gilels, Richter, Fischer, Solomon, etc etc). These do sound relatively safe interpretations to me. For example, Lewis's Waldstein is perfectly decent and a joy to listen to... but compare the last movement to Barenboim's (or even Fischer's!) - that fantastically joyous bit towards the end when you feel you're listening to an entire orchestra blasting with utter joy - and you can't help but feel it's not in the same league when it comes to sparkle. Ditto the Hammerklavier. Paul Lewis gives us a nice rendition. The adagio sostenuto comes in at ... Read More:

Sorry, this might upset some other reviewers and 'purists' but I have to say as good as this recording is, and it is, callas does give a good performance, but it doesn't light a candle to the 1962 Karajan recording on decca legends with Leontyne price as Tosca she is absolutely stunning in the role, I defy anyone not to be moved and have the hairs go up on the back of their neck when they listen to her vissi d'arte(my ultimate favourite opera aria), so do yourself a favour and get that cd now! You won't regret it.
