This is a wonderful album, musically. The sound is clear, the choices superb.
BUT - and it is a big but - if you are planning to use tracks from this album for your wedding there is a potential for gross confusion because the digital index is for a Maria Callas album. So be warned, and make sure that whoever is in charge of ensuring that the right track is played at the right time has their wits about them.

In 2008, this album still defines Libera at their peak - and is surely one of the great vocal albums of all time. It takes you on a journey and feeds your soul. Simply awesome. Don't miss them live!

Everything you would want as in introduction to Vaughan Williams is here and it sounds fabulous. Whilst not my favourite recording of "The Lark Ascending", its still a treat and more than compensated for by the magnificent recordings of the "English Folk Suite" and "Oboe Concerto".
Disc 2 is just a sheer delight from start to finish. Every track is sublime and you couldnt ask for a better selection of Vaughan Williams on 2 discs. The only comparison I can draw is the "Abba Gold" collection. Thats how good Vaughan Williams and this cd is. Just buy it and enjoy England's finest composer. It makes my day better whenever I put it on.

Every time you listen to this CD you will be amazed at the quality of it. Excellent playing from the orchestra under the experienced direction of Davis- he makes the music shine; flexible and powerful playing from the LSO. The recording is surely demonstration quality; you cannot listen to the start of "Mars" - or any other section of the set -and not be amazed by the clarity of the sound.
For the price, this is an excellent set; it remains one of the best even compared to rivals that cost much more.

The Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs has Thibaudet's sets of the complete Debussy solo piano music at the top of the digital recordings, and this is certainly high quality.

We have several recordings of the Preludes and some other works, but there is nothing to come close to Thibaudet for great performances and superior recording quality.

The liner notes are very helpful, and in the first set you get different articles in English, French, German and Italian. Great if you are multilingual, but only of marginal interest to me. The second set has one article and translations, not separate articles.

Well worth purchasing.

Well, I have to disagree with the other reviewers. I thought this was very disappointing. Mr. Rifkin may be a very competent pianist but he just doesn't have a "feel" for ragtime. The recordings here are plodding and pedestrian and while they may be technically very competent, there is no real personality here and no sense of fun, which is what ragtime is all about. If you like your ragtime sanitised and homogenised, this CD is for you. If you like it raw and rebellious, the way it was meant to be, give this one a miss.

I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

I am glad this version is still available after all these years for it is a gem! Written as part of the War Trilogy ( 8th and 9th Symphonies being the others) it symbolises the struggle for survival in a besieged Leningrad. This version may not be to everyones taste for it is very loud, fast and brash. Leonard Bernstein draws every emotion possible from this music; he allows the music to flow and the emotions to surface. A wonderful performance all round. The recording is brilliant too, but make sure you don't upset the neighbours for it can get very loud particularly during the famous March, and the closing bars in the final movement. No lover of Shostakovich should be without this version.

For a long time I couldn't imagine a better performance than Bernard Haitink's recording of Vaughan Williams's 2nd Symphony. Then I acquired this one by Vernon Handley and found it even finer. Handley communicates superbly the poetry, exuberance and drama in the score. The climax of the slow movement is a high point: I've never heard it done more passionately than in this recording. And the grinding climax of the finale - looking forward to the music of "Job" - is also enormously powerful.

The 8th Symphony has always been something of a closed book to me. The performance of the work's dedicatee, John Barbirolli, is the best I've heard, but Handley does a better job than most at penetrating its mysteries.

EMI's recording is very fine in both ... Read More:

What a wonderful collection this is. Anyone with any taste whatsoever in classical music (and plenty who don't) will realise when they listen to this that it is truely a masterpiece. The title track (Danse Macabre) is probably best known (in the UK at least) for being the title music to the BBC series "Jonathan Creek", and has also been featured in an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", showing that it has an ability to grip and excite even those with no classical interest. This collection makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, it has that kind of power.

If you buy any classical album ever, this would be a fantastic choice - I can not praise this work high enough.
