I'm with Michael Hamilton on this one. Loads of polyphony in search of a melody and most irritating, particularly track 6 (When David heard) where the interminable "My son" had me tearing my hair out(at least the bit that's left!) Save your money and try the excellent Polyphony in " Nocturnes" or "Lux aeterna" by Morten Lauridson.

I have a row which is ongoing with my friend Tomas who says that Mozart is 'too light'. Listen to these recordings with the cherubic Arthur Grimaux and you will hear that he is not 'too light' but 'like light'. It is like hearing sunlight. If that sounds a bit bipolar I apologise but this music is as near to an altered state as you can achieve without recourse to chemicals (which I would never. I am keeping myself pure for Wolfgang). I play it on my MP3 player whilst cycling to work, and in the autumn sunlight with mist on the canal, I can believe in angels and taste the next life. BUY.

Yes - two! Wunderlich with the Philharmonia in Kingsway Hall, and Ludwig with New Philharmonia in Abbey Road, 29 months later. But you'd never know. Sound quality is excellent, although Wunderlich is somewhat forward. Wonderful singing and evocative, haunting playing. Simply the best...

In a recent BBC3 "CD Review" broadcast, Alexandra Wilson made a gallant attempt to achieve the impossible task of choosing amongst forty or so recordings of "La Boheme" - and while I agreed with her ultimate choice of the Beecham recording with Bjorling, Merrill and De Los Angeles, I have rather more regard for this discarded Karajan recording simply because Pavarotti's voice, in its prime, as she herself put it, "runs through the recording like a golden seam". The rest of the cast is wonderful, too, although Karajan's love for the score is manifested in a rather deliberately "beautiful" approach and thereby slightly undercuts the drama. I cannot be without either recording of this eternally youthful and moving opera, and although Freni was captured in slightly fresher, ... Read More:

This was an excellent album and a great starting point for anyone who isn't famililar with Watson. The mix of music was excellent. It is a "Greatest Hits" album so obviously there is going to be songs from previous Watson albums (in relation to the value for money comment below). Barcelona is a wonderful song on this album and really tests Watson's upper register well. One criticism, I have a BIG problem with the way in which Russell changes into a "pop"/contemporary type voice for a few of the songs. This seriously reduces his credibilty as a serious tenor and I (along with many other critics) would advise him to stick to the classical/tenor voice and avoid that cheap/tacky boyband voice he forces in some songs. Other than that, an exceedingly good album.

Ballet scores don't come any better than this. Prokofiev's score is an order of magnitude greater than Tchaikovsky's, and this classic version by Previn and the LSO does full justice to superlative music. It is intelligent, sensual and witty and offers outstanding value.

Prokofiev's score manages to match Shakespeare's drama in its intensity, complexity and economy. A notable feature of the play is its time compression. In the world of the play, all the action takes place in three or four days. In stage-time, this is reduced to a mere trice: 'the two-hour's traffic of our stage'. In Prokofiev's version, ideas come equally thick and fast - and enough of them to last most composers a lifetime. What's more, like the play, the ballet score is full of contrasts: ravishing ... Glenn Gould is simply the master of this set, and in my opinion, this is the greatest recording ever made, even the 1955 doesnt come close.

its not the velocity of the recording that makes it magical, but rather the passion with which the music is performed.

and no, gould's voice doesnt bother me at all, in fact, it adds to the uniqueness of the recording.

I've always enjoyed choral music but never really been sure what it was I was listening to, apart from the really well known tunes, some of which, shamefully, I recognised from adverts or films. Many well known ones are included here of course, such as "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana, the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves", the "March of the Toreadors" from Carmen; "Ode to Joy", "Zadok the Priest" and of course chunks of "The Messiah".

This double CD with well over 2 hours of music and 33 samples is the perfect way to discover (and put a name to!) other beautiful pieces of music. I was particularly pleased to hear Allegri's "Miserere" which has always sent goose bumps up and down my spine, and the "Humming Chorus" from Madame Butterfly.

I think its incredible value ... Read More:

The singing is very poor. Her voice is weak. Please try Renee Fleming or Anne Sofie Von Otter. They wipe the floor with Katherine vocally. I brought this CD to see what all the hype was and I can only assume it is because she is very pretty.Shame we cant say that about her voice
