I have often listened to church music thinking to myself is it all manifested in the same place and released under different titles? However this selection 'hits the spot' with some great renditions of worshipful music and if you like to listen to part singing then cd 1 is excellent. There also some lovely descants some of which i had not heard before, an inspiring selection. Excellent.

This is a great performance with lots of fun. Anna Netrebko is a stunning Adina. Rolando Villazón is a clumsy but charming Nemorio. Ildebrando D'Arcangelo is a credible fraud and a great actor. L'Elisir d'Amore is a funny story with a happy end. You will enjoy it.

Having listened to this CD dozens of times now, it keeps getting better. The piano playing is brilliant, the orchestral accompaniment up to the job.Sound quality on high-end hi-fi is a little below top-notch, but more than adequate. Fillers are also varied and interesting AND beautifully played. As the only (?) stereo recording, this is superb value from every perspective, and rates between 4 and 5 stars on every count.

This is a remarkable piece of music by any measure and should be in everyone's classical collection even if you are not normally a fan of vocal or religious music. You'll see many people lavish superlatives on this piece of music - and with absolute justification. In my view no superlative would be over-the-top. For my part, I could say that it is sublime, superb, even peerless. But actually, I think it is other-worldly. I've never written a review before, but my listening to this CD after I bought it earlier has compelled me to do so! This recording of three truly great solists, Yo Yo Ma, André Previn and Leonard Bernstein, is simply fantastic. The amazing work of Shostakovich is given a new lease of life by these contemporary performers, who definitely breathe into it new life. Typically, Shostakovich's cello music is attributed to Rostropovich, but I think Yo Yo Ma's interpretation of this - his edgy sound - is something to rival even him. This is definitely a CD you'll want to play on loud - the orchestral clarity and recording quality is simply divine.
