Gramophone "Gloriously pompous," says Marc Rochester of the fanfare that opens Poulenc's Gloria. He's quite right, of course, but also right in pointing out that it is absolutely electric. And that goes for much of this terrific album. When the massed forces of Polyphony, the Britten Sinfonia and the Trinity College Choir ring out at full strength, the sound is simply incredible.

The recordings found on this disc are some of the best available (...in fact, the Britten conducting Britten is the Gramophone's Recommended Recording!). Add to that the most delightful account of Schumann's "Scenes from Childhood", and you find a fantastic disc. Then look at the price! 5 stars for a well rounded CD, which wont break the bank.

This three-CD set is built around three of the biggest sonatas - the Pathetique, the Waldstein, and the Hammerklavier. I'm not a pianist, but I do know these pieces very well from many different performers (Brendel, Barenboim, Gilels, Richter, Fischer, Solomon, etc etc). These do sound relatively safe interpretations to me. For example, Lewis's Waldstein is perfectly decent and a joy to listen to... but compare the last movement to Barenboim's (or even Fischer's!) - that fantastically joyous bit towards the end when you feel you're listening to an entire orchestra blasting with utter joy - and you can't help but feel it's not in the same league when it comes to sparkle. Bottom line up front, this is one of the best John Williams compilations available. It has not only memorable movie soundtrack songs, but also his music from the Olympics. While other John Williams music CDs have lots of songs, this one has some of the best variety compared to others.

this is my favourite set of the beethoven symphonies..the sound is superb, and the playing has plenty of energy and feeling - quite a fast pace to other versions though

There are two sides to Shostakovich's music and most listeners tend to know only the darker side. There is wit in Shostakovich's music although usually in acidic or sardonic way. There was a time before the Stalinist purges and the Second World War when the wit really flourished and Yablonsky and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra (formerly the U.S.S.R Symphony Orchestra) give us some very fine examples of it. The plot of "The Bolt" (evil capitalist industrialists brought low by rightous socialism) so embarassed the composer that he rarely spoke of it and never pushed for a revival after its initial run. This is a superb buy! Callas is in stronger voice here than in the 1959 remake, with brilliant highnotes. This recording is the first of the opera sets Callas made with EMI. She is caught in very good voice. Tagliavini would take the role of Edguardo in 1959, but here is the greatest Edguardo of them all, Giuseppe di Stefano. Tito Gobbi is very memorable as Enrico also. The sound is good, similar to the famous Tosca with De Sabata. This is the best budget Lucia.

As a fervent atheist, I was move greatly by the sheer depth of devotion reflected in this music. A conversation of a profound nature is started across the short chasm of four and a half centuries. I was exposed to later choral music as a schoolboy (particularly Byrd- Tallis' protege) but never felt so overwelmed. Other recordings may be technically superior, but this is great value.
