Well i bought this a while ago now but the music is brill and was used on a tv advert for a building society and I herad it on classic fm in my car once while out with a bird and I said i will have to but this so I did. But you can probably download it now anyway like lots of people do!

What more praise can be added to that of the previous two reviews? They have said it all! If I could I would give it much more than 5 stars! This is one of my all-time favourite CDs - this particular interpretation of Allegri's "Miserere", for me, is simply the best! I cannot find words to describe its effect on me - it is truly inspiring, sublime and uplifting! The Sixteen are extremely accomplished artists who bring great musicality and depth to all of their performances - they will never disappoint!

I had seen many of the performances in this set recommended separately so to have them all together in one set at such a low price is great. The sound is very good and even if you only like half the music on these CDs, this is still a fantastic bargain.

I am constantly playing this in the car because I love it so much, other recordings are good but this is just a little bit different, in the Allegro movement of Spring if you listen to the bit before the whole violin and viola section thunders it's way to the tumultuous tweeting solo, you will notice that Nigel bow's 4 times in quick succession instead of the usual 2, the cadenza allows for this and Nigel exploited it with typical panache. It's good to see him back in the limelight once more with his new recording, now lives in Krakow with his Polish missus.

This performance of Rachmaninov's second symphony made quite a stir when it was released on vinyl back in 1973 and although that may seem like a generation ago (because it is, sadly!), this newly (1999) re-mastered version succeeds in recapturing the excitement which its original release created. Prior to this recording, Previn and the LSO had toured with the symphony to Russia, where the unexpurgated version had not been heard for years, and it caused a sensation. Listening to this recording, it is not hard to understand why. This is unashamedly beautiful and lyrical music, played by an orchestra and conductor who had no misgivings about whether the music was fashionable or not, and given its full measure of feeling, with great drama and passion. It's an odd disc and no mistake, but make no mistake that the sound of the viola d'amore (a near extinct instrument) is lovely: warm, spacious, and slightly other worldly. The repetoire is a mixture of historical and contemporary - some from the brief period the instrument was in use, and some written specially for Garth Knox. It's hard to know who exactly to recommend this to! I bought it alongside the film soundtrack 'Tous Les Matins du Monde' and that kinda works. If you like baroque, generally, or the recordings of Jordi Savall in particular, you might like this more contemporary variation on a theme. But if you like more challenging contemporary compositions, or ambient music, then you might like this too. It's ... Read More:

I agree wholeheartedly with the review by J.J.Rhodes, but feel I should make the point that the whole set is recorded in full glorious MONO! Once you have got over the shock of the sound stage collapsing into a point source however, the music really is delightful, and takes me back to the days when I used to pay 9d to sit up in the gods at the Golders Green Hippodrome to hear the D'Oyly Carte company sing their way through all those charming numbers. This set has a distinctly dated feel about it, and makes one realise just how much performing styles, as well as recording techniques, have changed in half a century (and some of the artists were clearly chosen for their ability to act rather than their ability to sing!).
