We bought this map for a holiday on Crete in early 2008 and we used a hire car to get around the island. We are usually good at using maps to find our way but with this one we wasted a lot of time on wrong turnings.

The statement in the synopsis that "every road is included" is far from true. It is just not anything like that detailed. To add to the difficulty, there are a lot of major road developments underway on Crete and the map has become badly out-of-date. A good map is needed because of the lack of signposting especially in towns and villages. The coastal resorts have also seen numerous route changes and little seems to correspond to what is on the map. Sometimes a large hotel would be found where the map indicated a road ... Read More:

This book contains the usual Lonely Planet attributes of glaring ommissions, inaccuracies, strange recommendations and howling errors. And then there's the endless padding out of accommodation/restaurant listings to make up the weight. It feels like it has been rushed together, even though it's the third edition.
However, there is still quite a lot of useful information that you may not necessairly find out elsewhere - the trouble is, you don't know if those bits are the accurate ones until you find out for yourself.

I am a big fan of Antony Beevor, enjoying every book that I have read by him. However, this account of the invasion and resistance on Crete during WW2 falls a bit short compared to his epic works on Berlin and the Spanish Civil War.
The best thing about this work is that it does flow well and is written in a very readable style, so you don't get bogged down and I believe it gives a good overview with what was going on from beginning to end.
There are quite a few things which would improve it though. There are not enough maps for a start and the work is so skewed towards a British viewpoint that I would have loved to have found out a bit more about the Cretans and the Germans. The Italians hardly get a mention so I really have no idea what ... Read More:

Describing the operation to take the island from the ANZAC garrison and the recently evacuated forces from the Greek debacle. Although it is generally well known that it was ‘a close-run thing’, it wasn’t until I read this book that I became aware just how close the Commonwealth forces came to pushing the Fallschirmjager off the island. But in a few days of bitter fighting the paratroopers had captured the island from a numerically superior but ill-prepared and disorganised enemy.

An excellent read - I could not put this book down.

I bought three walking guides for a recent visit to Western Crete, and this was the nicest one: clear maps, good selection of walks of various lengths and in different kinds of terrain, nice mixture of the popular and the more quiet country lanes. We did five of the 31 included walks and found the descriptions clear and useful. The times that we went astray it was from not reading the instructions clearly enough, but hey, getting lost can be good fun too - though it was rather prickly!
I think this just beats the Hirner/Murbock walking guide, though that is pretty good too; and the Wilson White Mountains guide, which seems more geared towards the trekking community.
Only drawback - the book has helpful bus timetables in the back. Don't believe ... Read More:

This is the most informative book I have read on living in Crete, or Greece for that matter. It gives you loads of information, people to contact, government departments, etc. I even emailed the author with a question and she responded, most helpfully right away.

I highly recommend this book to anyone hoping to move to Crete, or just wanting information.
