Verdi's Aida comes thrillingly to life in this splendid production from the Metropolitan Opera. Aprile Millo is in excellent voice in the title role and sings with great musicality throughout. Indeed this sense of musical values being the most important is reflected in the fine performances of the rest of this all star cast most notably Placido Domingo and Dolora Zajick as Radames and Amneris respectively. The production is old fashioned but attractive and the physical acting is rudimentary but the vocal acting gets prizes all round. This was a favourite performance for me on video and is now excellently transferred onto DVD (sub titles optional). First rate.

The role of Gustavus in Un Ballo in Maschera has long been one of Pavarotti's favourite and stalwart roles. His recording under Sir Georg Solti remains one of the glories of the CD catalogue. However in this live performance from the Met he does not quite maintain his high standards. Everything individually is present, the character, the vocal tone and range - but it does not quite come together. In this performance he is far out-shone by the heart-felt Amelia of Aprile Millo - playing to her "home crowd" and giving an intensely musical and dramatic performance. Her act 3 aria is the highlight of the performance. Nucci, once over a shaky start gives a strong Renato, Florence Quivar provides strong support as Ulrika. Levine leads ... Read More:

This is a superb production as we have come to expect from the Met - lavish costumes and extraordinary set changes. Aprile Millo is in glorious voice as Aida, with just the right mix of power and the ability to float top notes when required. Although the role lies a little on the high side for Domingo he sings Radames like a natural, with endless streams of tone and commitment. The star if this set though is arguably Dolora Zajick in the role of Amneris - this a voice that really has you on the edge of your seat. The trial scene where she pleads for Radames' life is very moving and ultimately sensational - she receives a well deserved ovasion at the close of this scene. There is no better video of Aida on the market - buy it now!
