DVD : Saturday Night Fever [1978]
John Travolta (Grease) stars as Tony Manero, a troubled 19 year old who's joy in life comes from the dance floor, and when Stephanie comes along, he finds a whole new world to be explored in dancing.

This 1977 music drama is one of the reasons Travolta is one of Hollywood's most established stars with a mesmerizing Oscar nominated performance as Tony Manero, the troubled paint store assistant whose only joy comes from dancing. Travolta is an icon on the dance floor in this picture, with sweet moves and a great image, especially in his slick white suit. Dancing moves, motives and timing all combine to give him one of his best performances in his career.

Having a difficult home life but a joyous night life gives the film ... Read More:

Two friends go missing, and private investigator Maggie McKeown (Heather Menzies) is assigned to track them down. After searching with no luck, her trail leads her to Paul Grogan, (Bradford Dillman) a recluse living up in the mountains. He tells her that the only way people would be up there is if they were swept away to a nearby damn. They pack up and head over to the damn, which also houses a secret military base. Breaking and entering, the two discover that the supposed closed facility is still operational. After getting away from a guard, they accidentally throw a switch, draining a pool in the middle of the facility into the river. Later, they discover that the pool housed a giant swarm of mutated piranha, which the military created for use in ... Read More:

I read a scathing review of this movie recently--the issue was that the reviewer LOVED it (a child of the 80's, like myself), but the version they had bought was in the pan-and-scan format. This was found to be so upsetting they did not recommend buying it. I totally agree that the cinematography is a crucial element of this film. However, the DVD that I purchased from seller "selectcheaper" is wide-screen, so do not worry about the only version being out there is pan-and-scan. I'm not sure where the other reviewer bought their copy, but I suspect it may have been bootlegged. If you receive a pan-and-scan, return it immediately. If you (the upset reviewer) are reading this, please try and find the widescreen; it's still stunningly beautiful.

This film is probably the most tedious and self indulgent load of drivel I have ever seen. The characters are unbelievable and impossible to empathise with and i write as someone who enjoys media experiences which deal with faith and enjoy films which deal with the more controversial aspects - in contrast, I feel the film 'Priest' was more disturbing but which dealt with issues I could relate to and is a film which I now rate as one of my favourites. I fail to understand the point of this Scorsese disaster. My overwhelming question after watching it was '...what was the point?'. If I had watched it in a theatre I would have walked out - not out of disgust or due to having my faith insulted, but out of sheer boredom. I think this film should most certainly ... Read More:

Considering the chaotic, often drug-fuelled circumstances of its production, New York, New York seems a lot more disciplined and successful than it has any right to be. While there's never once a sense or flavor of New York - this is pure Hollywood all the way - Scorsese's mixture of stylised settings and naturalistic drama goes beyond the traditional happy ending and takes what starts out a standard boy-meets-girl musical plotline into darker emotional territory. It may lose its way towards the and (partially due to the overlong Happy Endings number taking us away from the characters for too long), but it gets a lot more right than it gets wrong, and has a great use of color. It was also interesting to compare the theatrical version and director's cut included on ... Read More:

This film is almost, and I say almost, so bad its good. But only almost. Robert De Niro (not known for his clarity of speech) has had a stroke and can't speak properly. The other one (god knows who he is) speaks in a stupid affected voice. This is apparently a "comedy" but the only time anybody laughs is at the end when both of them spend a lot of time mumbling. Absolutely atrocious.

I was unsure about this film at first; it sounded like a generic teen movie taken a little too far, but upon recommendation of a friend, I watched it at last. Not a moments regret there, I assure you. My face muscles ached from laughing so hard (particularly amusing was seeing Smallville's Lex Luthor a-with hair, and b-in a dress!!)

A truly brilliant comedy with, I'll admit, a very silly plot, but nonetheless a gem of a movie (containing, incidentally, the most prefectly timed fall I've EVER seen)
