One of Danny Kaye's finer hours, this farce stands the test of time pretty well. Kaye was the Jim Carrey of his time - if you don't like his pratfalling style of physical comedy once, you won't ever like it - but even if not a fan of his particular brand of tomfoolery, the verbal patter alone is worth the price of admission.
The plot should be brushed over - it's intricate and daft as a good farce should be, revolving around mistaken identities and wooing the girl, and multiple characters up to nefarious deeds. Complications arise when Kaye tries to pretend he is the Jester, and is then hypnotised to believe he is a great swordsman and lover, and changes between identities at the snap of a finger. It is the wonderful script that makes ... Read More:

just watched the blu ray version of this classic movie, and i must say for most part it looks positively stunning! considering its age it puts many modern films to shame! and with plenty of extras to keep most movie fans happy its a great example of what can be done with the extra space that blu ray discs have to offer.Th Adventures of Robin Hood [Blu-ray] [1938] [US Import] oh just to confirm the disc came from america and is region free playing without any problems on my playstation 3.

It was for films like this that we used to queue up in the rain outside the local Granada. It starts off in the most pleasing and heartwarming way and keeps it going right through to the delightful and amusing ending. Having seen this film many years ago, I have since had a lovely evening in the company of my grandchildren listening to them laughing at our heros and hissing at the baddies. A purchase of this film would, I'm sure, make a perfect gift for family or friends. Please don't let it pass by.

The opening scene when Wolf (Rathbone) arrives in Frankenstein, the village named after his infamous father, is quite atmospheric, as the train negotioates a petrified, gnarled landscape. And Lugosi's performance as Ygor is inspired though predictably hammy. Lionel Atwill delivers a memorable and believable performance as Inpector Krogh (lampooned affectionately in Young Frankenstein). But that's about all to commend this film. I love Rathbone in his Sherlock Holmes role, but I'm afraid I think his performance here is well over the top. Some scenes make me cringe in fact.He later castigated this film as a 'penny dreadful' but I'm afraid he's more than a few quid dreadful here.
Karloff's monster is now reduced to a speechless dummy wearing a grubby fleece, denuded ... Read More:

Tried all over the place to get the 2 disc Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein, and eventually gave up and ordered this instead. Bit of a risk this, because the 2-disc extras looked so good, and they aren't mentioned in the product details, but happily, when it arrived, it included the same extras as that edition. I suppose you wouldn't expect Universal to do completely new pressings, but it's nice to find out they haven't. Obviously, "Son of Frankenstein" (and "Ghost of Frankenstein" for that matter) would have been preferable to "House of Frankenstein" in such a set, but then if I wanted all the Universal stuff I'd be going for the Universal Monsters Legacy set anyway. All-in-all, a good way to get hold of the original, and arguably the best, two Frankenstein movies.

DVD : Greta Garbo Signature Collection: Anna Christie / Mata Hari / Queen Christina / Anna Karenina / Camille / Ninotchka
All Greta Garbo's key films from the talking era in one box set - only notable exception being Grand Hotel. But this is a minor complaint: it is an ensemble piece (it is included in the Joan Crawford Signature Collection where it clearly shows that young Crawford can more than hold her own in any company) and is, on balance, minor film in Garbo's career.

The films included here - just pay attention to the titles: each is named after her character. Signature collection indeed! I can't think of another star ever to have pulled off such a career proving trick, showing clearly what a huge, huge box office draw she was, and what power "The Swedish Sphinx " held over the studios as well as the public. Not bad for a shy, lanky girl who's single mother was a cleaner in Stockholm... ... Read More:
