I shall always remember the thrill as a small boy when my parents took me to a local cinema to watch a western. Randolph Scott and particularly Joen McCrea were the order of the day at the time. But Shane was such a hard act to follow regular westerns were just not the same after. Shane played by Alan Ladd, was so good that even with the enhanced photography of today there are not many westerns that can hold a candle to this thoughtful film.

It is interesting that the original intended casting was for Montgomery Clift to play the part of Shane and for William Holden to portray Joe Starrett. Whilst I can see the logic of these selections, Katharine Hepburn as the Mrs. Starrett just does not seem right somehow.

I bought this a few weeks ago as it was so cheap.
Again, when it was first on the telly [think back in 2000]I never watched it but remember my mum banging on about not missing it.
Anyway,I can honestly say I was hooked from the first episode.
What great acting.
Its 6 ,near hour long ,episodes all about different people that work at a textiles factory.Sounds boring but believe me it's far from that.
Some great faces in this,Christopher Ecclestone,Sarah Lancashire,Lesley Shape and even Maxine Peake from Shameless.
You can do a lot worse than parting with your dosh for this dvd.
I will deffo be buying Series 2

I decided to put up a review of this film after purchasing it from Amazon, at just under 7.00GBP.
To be honest, their cannot be many people who have not seen the movie before, although, perhaps like me, it has been quite a while. DVD special features (or lack of them) don't really concern me, and this review concentrates on the film.
Basically, Eastwood is hung in error by a posse in search of a murdering cattle rustler. Eastwood is found by a passing Marshal, while still alive. After being cleared, he takes a position as a Marshal himself. While "vengeance" is to some degree in the film, Cooper (Eastwood's character) does not actively go in search if this for most of the film.
Anyway, to the main question: satisfaction and ... Read More:

This is not going to be a diatribe against the puzzling nominations and awards of the academy...
Just let me say John Wayne and John Ford deserved it many times over.
Once this out of my chest... the second (of the "Cavalry Trilogy" and the only one in color) film dedicated to the US cavalry (which in fact is a recurrent theme of the director... see my review of "Fort Apache")...
This time the main (and secondary played by Victor McLaglen) characters are both waiting for retirement for the Army... and have to do a last patrol... from there on... duty, decency and common sense take care of the script. In parallel runs a love affair between the first lieutenant and the commandant niece which is also pretended by the second lieutenant... ... Read More:

The Punisher is one of the worst films I have watched in a while, and not the kind of bad like certain films I just don't like, but rather a certifiably bad example of how to make an awful film. While I would count myself as a bit of a comics buff, I'm not that into Punisher, and I still hated the movie, so I can only imagine how much the fans hated it. From what I knew about Frank Castle, he was a character not unlike Batman but without the moral code, a vigilante in the true, murderous sense of the word. As a Batfan, I thought it would be refreshing to see a character who takes revenge that extra bit further and actually kills those responsible for causing his pain. Thus, I gleefully handed over £4 for the film in Asda, looking forward to what I predicted ... Read More:

I cant reccommend Red Dawn enough.Easily the most laughable film ever made.Shocking propaganda and hilariously cheesey and wooden performances from all invovled.Frighting that it was ever supposed to be taken seriously.Patricks "tormented" Lawerance of Arabia leader type character is worth the asking price alone. The film is constant throughout with each scene just as absurd and humourous as the preceeding one.A true classic, fun for all the family.10/10

Set in a dusty, desolate, fictional town called Anarene,Peter Bogdanovich's 'The Last Picture Show' is a nostalgic and bittersweet tale of growing up in 1950's small town Texas.Filmed entirely in black and white to major effect it follows the lives, trials and tribulations of the habitants of Anarene. The movie begins and ends with slow moving camera shots of the cafe, pool hall and picture house, three buildings which are at the heart of the film. The main characters which drive the movie along are High School graduates Sonny(Timothy Bottoms),Duane(Jeff Bridges) who is to join the US army and posted to Korea and the flirting, teasing Jacy(Cybil Shepard) whose virginity every boy in the town wants to take.Other notable characters are the school basketball coach Popper-who's wife Ruth ... Although it's perhaps not in the same class as The Searchers or Rio Bravo, this is still one of the Duke's better westerns.

Most of the classic western ingredients are here: broody young gunslingers, stampedes, posses, brawls, wagon trains etc. It's good fun for all ages.

The picture has slight grain and a few speckles in a few scenes. But it shouldn't spoil your enjoyment.

In fact, considering the age of the film, the picture quality is probably as good as can be expected with vivid colours and a sharp picture (I suspect a lot of effort went into cleaning it up)

The mono soundtrack is a slight disappointment. As the film's rousing score would have benefited from a 5.1 mix. But it is a good mono mix, with lots going on, clear speech ... Read More:

Wagon Master is an outstanding John Ford Western. Not that much of a story but it does not need it. Great acting. This film gets better the more time it is watched. Showing how a Wagon Train would have looked. Full of interesting and people, there are no real stars and perhaps that is right as the film it's self is the real star!

This 1972 movie directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Steve McQueen as Doc McCoy and Ali MacGraw as his wife gets played on my dvd player regularly when i get boozed up. It is essentially the tale of a recently-sprung convict who must perform a bank robbery to pay back a character named Beynon who has pulled strings to spring him from prison. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong in this perfect robbery so we have this genre film that never slows up.

The film (penned by Walter Hill), however, is also about a marriage, its ups and downs, what can go wrong, how a cuckolded husband handles his wife's infidelity. .etc. Certainly the best thing in the movie is McQueen's usual understated performance. While he is not Marlon Brando, he doesn't have to be. A man of few words, ... Read More:
