I enjoyed the books whilst never thinking them great, but what they did do was create Lyra, an Alice for our time. She is sparky, bright and perhaps the most interesting girl character in childrens literature. Dakota Blue Richards does an amazing job of playing Lyra, she holds the whole of the film together. Kidman is also excellent as Mrs Coulter and the cast generally are very good, although I cannot believe in Ian McKellan as a warrior bear.
There is however an over reliance on CGI to create unnecessary spectacle that detracts from the story and narrative. In the book Lyra's world is more or less our world but less socially developed in some ways, to allow for certain plot threads. Changing this causes problems with the whole structure ... Read More:

this is one of my most favourite movies. there are some splendid reviews here already, so i will keep it short.
this is shakespearian comedy with dark undertones. this tale is about the nature of love. wonderful yet terrible love... etc. not everyone wins at the end. The actors are all wonderfully cast, and the landscape and locations are brilliant to. there is also a wonderful balance between the romance, the pangs of unrequitted love, laughs, music, chaos, revenge, etc. and it is all perfect. Ben Kingsley's Feste i think stands out most. and when Viola speaks of love (hers being impossible), i again feel the pain i had when i had my own heart broken.
this tale is not all romantic. For instance: Maria maries Sir Toby knowing his bad habits ... Read More:

The trailer looked great and I had high hopes for this movie. Especially after seeing stardust. But this is a hopeless childish movie, produced for another braindead generation that thinks over the top means big bucks.

Too bad, they got a good cast, great sets but really poor directing. And it is missing the sense of fun and wit Stardust had so much of. Absolutely no joy to watch.

This film is based on the first book in the best selling `His Dark Materials' series by Phillip Pullman and although I haven't read any of that series I did enjoy this adaptation. As I have not read the book that this film is based on I cannot comment about how close it is to that but from the comments of others I can deduce that this isn't too good an adaptation but I feel that it more than makes up for this with some truly spectacular CGI and some adequate performances by the all star cast.

Of the cast Nicole Kidman as the villainous Mrs Coulter was a surprising favourite of mine as I have never previously enjoyed any of her performances but she was unexpectedly good here. Another noteworthy performance was that of Sir Ian McKellen, he is always enjoyable and he was ... Read More:

I purchased this version of Pollyanna after reading the five star recommendations on Amazon but was bitterly disappointed. The actress who plays Pollyanna was awful, she held her mouth open all the time with her tongue between her teeth - most offputting. More worryingly, she couldn't act. Many of the storylines were a complete fabrication and not at all based on the book - in particular, the romance between Nancy and Tim and the whole episode with the motor car. Nancy should have beeen about the same age as Pollanna and not 10 years older - by contrast, John Pendelton should have been around 35-40 (he had been in love with Pollyanna's mother), not 55-60 as he appeared on the film. Aunt Polly and Dr Chiltern should have got married at Pollyanna's bedside and not in a church with ... Read More:

In 1953 19 year old Derek William Bentley, a young man with learning difficulties and the mental age of 11 became the last man in Britain to be hanged. Dereks crime? 5 words. "Let him have it Chris!"

The connotations of those 5 words lead to Derek being the last man in Britian to be executed, and after his hanging, Capital Punishment was thankfully abolished.

Derek Bentley, desperate to fit in with the 'in' crowd despite his disabilites got in with 17 year old Christopher Craig and when Chris decided to stage a robbery, he enlisted the help of Derek. To cut a long story short, the two ended up on the roof and when the police interviened and Derek gave himself up (without a struggle I might add) Chris Craig pulled a gun on the officers. Derek Bently then cried ... Read More:

I am not sure that a psychological crisis of an over-forty French writer, a husband and father, and his strange dependance on a young and cynical man in London who provides male escorts, is really a topic which I would like to investigate and analyse.
It is well filmed. The actors perform very professionally. As a fan of Daniel Auteuil, I would say that this is not his best role, although the moral degradation of a hero is shown very carefully.

I would recommend this film as a good example of modern cinematograph, and another example of professional abilities of Daniel Auteuil. But NOT as a pleasant evening entertainment after a day of hard work...

Come to think if it the whole story is about protecting the innocent.

Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards) was raised relatively unsupervised which lead to a wild child hood of mock-wars and mischievousness. An excellent liar who saves her from many situations, she may someday find her assets are liabilities. A chance visit by her uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), will change her life for ever.

Well movies can not be the book and many times for brevity speeches are cut and locations are rearranged (from a 400 page book to a 110 page script.) But you have to draw the line some where. Unfortunately this is one of those times where they left the action in and changed the story form a multifaceted mystery to a black and white good guy vs. bad guy. We may as well have been watching Saturday ... Read More:
