This is not a film i wanted to see but my girlfriend pursuaded me to watch it. It was fun and light, with some more darker scenes. I thought the acting was done well and the special effects were very good.

It's not a serious film with a serious story but the story line was easy to follow and thoroughly enjoyable as you (as the viewer) were introduced to different charactrs.

Would recommend to anyone with a lighter side.

The idea of a film about a British policeman in a small country village is more likely to conjure up thoughts of Midsomer Murders rather than Bad Boys II. However Edgar Wright manages to fuse together the fast paced action of one with the typical Englishness of the other in the excellent comedy Hot Fuzz written by and starring Simon Pegg. It is a hysterically funny police comedy with lots of action and spoof horror.

Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is the Met's number one police officer, but he is so efficient that his co-workers want to get rid of him. He is promoted to sergeant and moved to the small town of Sandford in Gloucestershire. When he gets there he is disappointed by the lack of crime in the village, and he is bewildered that the accident ... Read More:

I missed this series when first shown for some reason or other. Light hearted look of WW11 through German perspective. Both leads excellent and very enjoyable. Highlight of Billie Whitelaw running brothel not to be missed.

I had not heard of this film until I read MADE IN YORKSHIRE by Tony Earnshaw and Jim Moran. They say it was the only film made by Yorkshireman James Mason in Yorkshire. I think they are wrong. He made a film with his former wife Pamela in the 1940's in Yorkshire. Her dad who was a Yorkshire textile baron, financed it.

The Water Babies film is worth watching but not as good as it could have been. It was from the same team who made The Railway Children but how could anyone hope to match that classic.

Mason is brilliant and is the underrated Billie Whitelaw.

The cartoons sadly, are not.

Received the box set today and haven't actually seen the DVD movies yet, however I were slightly worried if all the DVD's from the box-set would all be in widescreen as I wanted them to be, and I found it annoying that no aspect ratio information were given on the Amazon.co.uk site.
So just in case others like I should wish for more information then I can infom you that it on the box-set says that all main features has english subtitles for the hearing impaired and more specifically for each DVD movie it says :

Omen I (2 disc, 30th Anniversary) is in approximately aspect ratio 2.35:1 and sound : English 5.1 and English 2.0 stereo
Omen II is in approximately aspect ratio 2.35:1 and sound : English 2.0 surround

This film was such a disappointment for me, I really did expect a Great British gangster film that would show London's notorious criminals and how ruthless they were in their prime. Instead I found myself watching two clueless twins who are as intimidating as a pair of goldfish roaming London doing rather little. Their mother of the story is wrongly portrayed as an eccentric feminist and as for the music, well that belongs in a B movie horror. If you are considering buying this film please don't, it's really not worth it I assure you you will be as disappointed as me and be even more annoyed at the potentinal this film had.

Baker, Whitelaw, Pleasance, some big names in a low budget attempt at gritty noir. The grit is supplied by the setting, Manchester, but this itself causes the film its biggest problems. Baker's accent wobbles all over the place, as it does for one or two other non-northern actors in the film. One of them, the villain of the piece, an old school friend of Baker's who went astray and is now a dangerous killer, doesn't have that problem at all, because he's an American and has clearly taken the sound advice not to even try the fairly tricky Manchunian lilt. Hmm, casting in the 1950s was a very peculiar art, as so many leads happened to be Americans playing British characters. Back then I suppose it seemed normal or acceptable at the cinema, but these days it looks and sounds downright ... Read More:

I remember I saw this movie I was about 17. I'd read the book and fell in love. It tells a love story between two men and the way they have to carry it out despite society rules (with some changes it still happens nowadays...).

The general message would be "love conquers all" but is it really so? Are Maurice and Scudder able to live happily ever after? I doubt, and on the beginning of the XXth century it would be even worse.

Despite all, it's lovely to watch the same kind of story we're used to watching in movies that portray society in different times, but now speaking about love between men! Although James Ivory's work is beyond criticism, in my point a view, there were some scenes in the book (the one when they are in London, sitting naked by the fire, for ... Read More:

What a great discovery this film turned out to be.
Never heard of it. Took a chance. Bingo.
Earthy Newcastle locations, fabulous b/w photography, great pace, wonderful performances and a fine, realistic script.
Director Sidney Havers went on to direct many of the best episodes of THE AVENGERS.
The DVD transfer is close to HD. On a 40" HD TV it looks so sharp and the greyscale tones are deep and beautiful.
This one makes me curious about the quality of other Optimum DVD releases.
Shame there is no trailer. Would have been cool to see how this gem was pitched, but the bottom line is, this is one terrific feature on a marvelous digital transfer that MUST have been taken from the original negative to make it look this good.

I have to say, I had pretty high expectations for this. I was not disappointed in terms of performance - Dench is stunning in the lead (a Golden Globe winning performance), as always.

The problem is, it's quite lightweight. Whilst the dialogue is quite amusing, it's also feels something like a child's drama in its simplicity. It was also a bit disappointing to see Garai in such a small role. She's the only other person on the DVD cover, yet I'm sure you could count her words on one hand. A pity for such a fine actress.

Cinematographically, it's quite pretty and well shot, especially for a television drama.

It's enjoyable, but if you want to see a meaningful war piece, this isn't the best bet. Enjoyable for the family though, and highly amusing seeing Ian ... Read More:
