This is by far the best western i have ever watched and will ever watch running for nearly three hours The Good The Bad And The Ugly is a must have for any collector of fine movies. Ennio Morricone's unforgettable soundtrack provides the pacing for the film and Clint Eastwood's acting provides and supports Eli Wallach's comments and cristicisms throughout the film. Need I say more

This is one of my all time favourites, a modern classic. The acting by the two main leads is superb; understated but deeply moving. This is not your normal 'chick flick' indeed it surpasses any label due to the quality of the acting and direction, even the rural Iowa scenery has it's own part to play. It's a testimony to the actors invloved that the film stands up despite it's relatively small cast. I read the novel after seeing the film, and unusually the film adaptation came out top. The anguish that Francesca and Robert feel is sweetly balanced by their love story and I recommend anyone who appreciates a gently told tale with great acting to buy this.

This badly contrived 1968 romp of a war movie brilliantly casts two acting giants from different sides of the Atlantic. Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton were at the top of their game at this stage of their careers, and they helped make Where Eagles Dare a hilarious, thoroughly enjoyable boys own adventure. "Broadsword calling Danny Boy, come in...." I will never forget that voice and those words. It reminds me of Christmas day TV. Anyhoo, the plot to Where Eagles Dare is incredibly contrived and implausible, the coincidences are staggering (as much that we're expected to believe them all as anything) and the reality deeply flawed. No matter how hard fighters have fought there is always one more battle around the corner. Trying to put his dubious past behind himself Pale Rider stumbles upon a small but split community. He is taken by their endeavours and honesty, but he is ultimately drawn into a fight he'd rather ride away from. Having been shown hospitality by them he obliges to see off an intruder in the shape of Richard Kiel(Jaws from Moonraker). He manages this in a manner reminiscent of David versus Goliath. A criticism I would level at our hero is that he accounts for more corpses than the Black Death, and his final confrontation leaving his "mark" in a unique fashion was way too contrived. I sometimes wonder about what is a review and what is a history lesson or what is a rehash of the entire film. Basically I think that in this scenario we should look at; Is it a good film? does it make you want to see more? ARE YOU ENJOYING IT? or are you so busy nit picking that you miss the whole context of what is going on? Do not watch this film with anything other than an open mind and an acute sense of outrageous humour. woof woof.

I'm gonna say something controversial now, I like this film more than The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Of course the third in the trilogy is a masterwork which I love (even got a poster of it on my wall!) but there's something great about this film that makes me so fond of it, it's just unfortunate that the third film was such a landmark of the Western genre that this film often doesn't get the recognition it deserves, like a younger brother trying to live up to the greater achievements of the older. I think what swings it for me though is just the amount of brilliant one-off scenes that this film has. Having owned the original Dirty Harry DVD collection which was released back in 2002,I was looking forward to this all new release and I was not dissapointed all of the original films have been given another re-master,not just the picture but also the sound has been given the dolby 5.1 remaster as well and if you have a surround sound system then eastwoods 44 magnum sounds just like the real thing!!. As well as the original extras there is a host of new extras and commentarys plus the addition of a small hardback book,production notes,Callaghans police ID badge! and also a poster and limited edition art cards complete the extras,sadly though no .44 Magnum included!!!.
