The best French film in 20 years? A masterpiece? Both of these suggestions are quite laughable and grossly overstate the importance of this film pairing in the context of French cinema as a whole which is without much doubt the greatest cinema in the world.

Both films are rather banal, bland pedestrian adaptations of Marcel Pagnol's book (at best)and provide little in the way of cinematic poetry to justify their own existence. Claude Berri brings very little to the stories which isn't there in the books so why not simply read the book instead? Okay, there's is nothing wrong with faithful adaptations which bring nothing new or fresh to the silver screen but truthfully these stories are not that exciting or original to begin with. ... From the DVD case of the movie under its French title, Le Bossu (The Hunchback), which is more satisfyingly overwrought than I could manage: When his great friend the Duke of Nevers is slain in a dastardly assassination plot by the Count Gonzague, fencing master Lagardere swears he will avenge the Duke's death and take care of the Duke's beloved orphaned daughter, Aurore. Sixteen years later, after secretly hiding with a touring theater group and raising the baby to young womanhood, Lagardere returns to the sumptuous Parisian courts to honor his deadly oath. Disguising himself as Gonzague's hunchback manservant, Lagardere infiltrates the Count's entourage and waits for his moment to strike and triumph over the traitorous forces of evil.

This comedy is a game of two halves - the first hour is belly-achingly funny (watch out for the grandmother's coat!) with great performances, particularly by Auteil. Around midway through the film it settles into pretty ordinary rom-com territory, and the belly laughs (and general interest , in my case) end. The basic premise (Antoine falls in love that his friend nearly committed suicide over) isn't overly clever, but few rom com plots are. what I found hard to believe was that both those in their own way very lively and strong characters that it would revolve around the lanky, snivelling, by her own admission desperate-to-be-with-anyone florist Blanche! Maybe that was a finer point of the plot that I missed (?) but I felt it was just a case of serious miscasting ... Read More:

Daniel Auteuil is Pignon, a man who's considered to be boring, straight laced, and rather uninteresting. When Santini (Gérard Depardieu) and his friends suggest Pignon should be sacked - Pignon decides to end it all. It's only because of a new found friend he finds a way to fool the masses at the condom factory and keep his job.

This isn't as funny as Le Diner De Cons nor Tais-Toi; but they're classics and it's hard to follow such a great act, but it's a very good film, Gérard is very funny as macho man Felix, and the welcome return of Thierry Lhermitte, one of Felix's friends. I also enjoyed the roles played by his secretaries: Michèle Laroque (Madame Bertrand) and Alexandra Vandernoot (Christine), as they had some great lines. Also good to see star of ... Read More:

If you want a night of blood, madness, dirt and sex...this film is for you. It is a great story but I just did not believe in the characters (with the exeption of Henry)and hence did not much care about their fate. This made the film unexciting. Yes it looks great and authentic but every character is portrayed as brutal and none come across as really likable which gives the film an unbalanced feel. You get to the point where you just wish they would all kill each other and be done with it. This is not light entertainment or a tale for the romantic at hearts. It does tell an interesting story if in a somewhat unconvincing and nightmarish way.

"My Best Friend" is an amiable but somewhat dull barely humourous French film starring Daniel Auteuil as an antiques dealer who is seeking a best friend after being told that he doesnt have any friends by some business acquaintances. He hires a taxi driver to help him make friends only for the taxi driver to gradually become the best friend he is seeking. The film climaxes with the taxi drivers appearance on the French "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire " show with Auteuil helping him in the "Phone a Friend" section. All fairly forgettable stuff.

Spoilers.....

I love this movie. I've always liked anything that Auteuil does so was bound to watch this and what a feast it is. My one regret is the movie is b/w although you hardly notice once you are into it because it's so charming a story.

I was particularly struck by the use of the knife-throwing act to become an erotic experience - what a clever theme.

I do not object to the ending that some call sugary. I think it is absolutely the right ending. We don't have to have all fantasy movies ending as tragedies just to please people who don't like happy endings. There are far too many movies that twist the story to ensure the ending is as miserable as possible which has been "fashionable" for some time and is becoming so tedious. The French are as much guilty ... Read More:

Like the other reviewers I saw this film years ago, late one night, on my own. It just stayed with me and for years I looked for it and told my friends about it. I was so pleased to find it and share it with my husband who despite not liking romantic type films thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, the plot is far fetched but I forgive that for the brilliance of Daniel Auteuil and Firmine Richard. What a wonderful but unlikely pairing, which works. The warmth of the film is wonderful. Watch it and enjoy!

papon ,a nazi collaborator ordered the massacre of at least 200-1000 peaceful demonstrators during the algerian war, drowned or shot in the heart of paris.

this movie is a socio-political hidden innuendo in the form of a refined and re-invented revisitation of the event and its reverbrating consequences, its victims are actually the guilt-ridden french conscience that tolerated a state sponsored concentration camp and brutal police killings intentionally, the satire or observation works in the form of a modern couple who are receiving violent messages ,the reaction of the spouses to each other is natural as the wife rebels against the husband's guilt ridden belated confessions to the root cause of their persecution,

haneke is a master and he deploys images to explain and suggests rather ... Read More:
