Had some time to kill and went to see this film. Given the overhype of the Narnia films and several other book adaptations I was surprised and delighted to find out it was great entertainment and well worth the ticket price.

Freddie Highmore does a superb job playing identical twins Jared and Simon, identical by looks but not by attitude and mannerisms, who have moved to a rural house once owned by their great uncle. Jared, who is always getting into trouble, finds a large and mysterious book about the magical realm all around the house written by his great uncle many years before.

The plot may be a little scary for younger children but it's fast paced and very watchable.

How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage for the way that he tries to invest Puck with thoughtfulness and fun: Jimmie Krankee would have done a better job. Rupert Everett's Oberon is reminescent of a Studio 54 Go-Go dancer murmuring something he has a distant memory of, and Kevin ... Read More:

This is a family movie, it is basicly a fairytale. If that put you off avoid the movie you probably won't enjoy it. The performances are all solid particularly that of Freddie Highmore, at least I think it was him I didn't check before writing this review. The effects are all solid if sometimes unspectacular.
The set up is simple, family move to a new home and find out there is some dark mystery yadda yadda yadda. Much like many horror movies in fact but there isn't much here to scare kids too much, just enough to make it effective. The film stands alone very well so there is no need for a sequel but also there could very well be a follow on story.
As a blu ray release it looks good, the short comings on effects are more visible but thankfully ... Read More:

George Clooney freely admits that "Ocean's Twelve" was made in order to ensure that both this and "Syriana" saw the light of day. Perhaps this is a case of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It is heartening to see something of use coming out of that.

"Good Night & Good Luck" seems, on the surface, to be a film about the witch hunts of Joseph McArthy against perceived threat of communism in America. The film traces journalist Ed Murrow's televisual campaign to discredit the committee set up to investigate this and also McArthy himself. Using newsreel footage to illustrate McArthy's interrogations highlights his approach excellently and also highlights the film's liberal tendencies, but this film isn't a critique on paranoia from invisible ... I'd just finished reading Karin Slaughter's book of almost the same name when this dvd popped through my letterbox so I initially thought - obviously mistakenly - that some film producer was ahead of the game!

As a thriller the film works well but only because of Anthony Hopkins as the lead criminal (if proven guilty, of course) and the attempt by a young legal hotshot, Ryan Gosling, to do just that.

Frankly, this would have been a run-of-the-mill made-for-tv film but for these two. Anthony Hopkins is magnificent as an aircraft engineer turned wife-killer who is determined to beat the rap.

I puzzled throughout the film until the answer was revealed just what he had done with the gun he used to kill his wife. Except she didn't die ... Read More:

6.L.A. Confidential [1997] starring: Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger

DVD : L.A. Confidential [1997]
Curtis Hanson has managed to direct a film which captures the late 1940's in both style and spirit. Often films depicting the glamourous side of this era immerse themselves too much in the styles and fashions of the time, rendering the actual characters superfluous to the movie. Not here though - the characters drive the film, blending in perfectly with the directing style swaying effortlessly to capture the gritty and the classic-Hollywoodesque, the guy has done his homework.

Risks were taken by casting relatively unknown non-Americans in the two major roles, a rare thing by a Hollywood studio. It's hard to imagine anyone else but Russell Crowe as the fiery `Bud' and at times Guy Pierce seems a bit awkward as `Exley' - but this isn't a flaw in his acting, this ... Read More:

Seen this at the cinema and a couple of times on TV.Bought this to try out my new KEF Kit 100 system and was not disappointed.Still makes you think how young these "men" were and a visit to the American War Cemetery at Madingley nr Cambridge only confirms this.

I have every film adapted from John Grisham's novels except for The Gingerbread man, without a shadow of a doubt this is at best an okay film, it does not even begin to touch A time to kill, The Client, Runaway jury or The Chamber and whilst not being blown away by either The Rainmaker nor The Pelican brief, they are both comfortably better films than this.

The film lacks the power, conviction and the direction of all of those films listed.

An excellent cast with 2 of my favourite actors in Gene Hackman and Tom Cruise, but even they are not at their best by some way, the only reason why Tom Cruise stands out is due to his being on screen for most of the film, Gary Busey is barely in the film, maybe a couple of minutes at best.

The film is very ... Read More:

This is a pretty straight-forward film that will never win any awards. But a movie doesn't have to win awards to be good. And this is a great example. The story is sweet and touching, and as another reviewer said, induces random moments of blubbing. The characters (for a pleasant change) are all decent, nice people, which helps you love the film even more. I wasn't really expecting much before I watched it, but We Are Marshall is just quality.

Film starts with a disintergrating family unit. Workaholic architect dad ignores and is irritated by his family, so that all laughing stops when he gets home from work. He never joins in the fun and cancels holidays. Wife Gail(Meryl Streep) believes their marriage to be over as he disappoints their young son yet again, cancelling a family trip. However mother and son set off on their own to navigate a river by dinghy that Gail knew as a young girl (she had even worked as a river guide). As they are about to set off the son makes friends with another group of three men, who are going on the same journey on the river. One of them (Kevin Bacon) starts flirting with Gail. Just then, unexpectedly her husband turns up to join in with the trip after all. The thrills begin as the two separate ... Read More:
