"American Gangster" is an entertaining film based on a true story about how a black New York gangster,played by Denzil Washington, who controls a large drug empire is brought to justice by a determined, incorruptable cop played by Russell Crowe. Washington builds his trade upon exclusive access to a South East Asian source and links with the US military who assist with his shipments. His rise seemingly goes unnoticed until he falls under the attention of Crowe's team. i'm a big fan of denzel washington, so i was looking forward to this film after having read the blurb on the dvd cover. the tagline on the cover asks "What if you could change the past?". my first thought after i'd watched this film was if i could change the past, i would have saved the last 121 minutes by not watching this nonsensical drivel. sory denzel, not this time

Flicking through my recommendations on Amazon today I came across this. Well I bought it when it first came out on DVD so thought I would add my voice to those other reviews about the quality. I won't say to much about the film. For me it was very, very enjoyable. Well acted (a pleasure to see so many British stars mixed with those from across the pond), well directed (the scene where Beatrice and Benedict are 'captured' by the trap is superb), with good music and wonderful scenery. Such a shame then that the DVD is so sloppily put together. In Mono only! No scene selection. No 'making of'. No directors' comments. Surely the time has come for a new edition? I've always loved this film, I had it on tape for years. It's a great story, intelligent, with superb acting. Other reviews say it all What did annoy me was that the DVD is two-sided. You have to watch half the film, then turn the DVD over to watch the other half. This isn't going to be enough to irritate everybody but it really irrited me, and I really wouldn't have bought it if I'd known about the format. I'm the lazy type who likes to settle down, surrounded by food, and not get up again until the film is finished and there's no food left. Like I said, not going to bother everybody but still worth knowing.

Why did I not hear about this film when it was out on cinema? AT LAST......some original scripts. One of the cleverest films I have seen in a long time, and is mentally stimulating. If you like "shoot em up's" avoid it. If you want a quality original film, snap Amazon's hand off at it's current price. UNDERVALUED. What I like, is quality films lose their value quickly (suits ME) and rubbish "shoot em up's" hold their price better. If you want the latter, buy a Playstation.

well i bought this dvd a week ago on the review of 14 people against 1,i can honestly say that this film was excellent! I watched it and wanted more, its a long time since i've seen something as good and enjoyed it as much as i have done this evening. i'm no big american football fan in fact i hav'nt got a clue about the game or even the rules .........but you don't need to know to watch this film. great acting, brilliant film what more can i say... without spoiling the story. At this price on amazon you'd be daft not to buy it!

Stunning movie - easily the best American urban/police thriller I've seen to date! VERY stylish and often brutal, this hooks from start to finish. It's not action packed, rather delivering thrills in short, sharp bursts. It's very atmospheric with an incredible central performance from Denzel Washington as antihero/villain, Detective Alonzo Harris, and strong support from Ethan Hawke as rookie officer, Jake Hoyt. Look out for small roles from the likes of Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre, in this unflinching portrayal of the very mean streets of LA. Also, Scott Glen, Cliff Curtis & Tom Berenger. Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, a courtroom drama, a major social issue ... what could go wrong? Well, let's start with the positives. A truly stunning performance from Hanks, and his Oscar was well deserved. It's worth watching the film just for Hanks. Denzel Washington was ... okay. One of my favourite actors, Washington gave it his best, but the character written for him was rather drab. The energy and passion he was later able to bring to his character in "Crimson Tide" (where again, he was fighting for what he believed was right) simply wasn't possible with this script. The courtroom "drama" was a serious let-down. Nothing happened! A rousing story about a black platoon facing prejudice and annilation during the American civil war. Matthew Broderick's finest performance as the leader of the first all black regiment fighting the confederates and racism from their own Union army. Supported by the fine Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The plight of these brave men will emotionally move you, possibly to tears, although mine was more of a controlled welling, though my lower lip did quiver when the credits rolled.
