"Useful new things to be said about the debacle in Iraq are in very short supply. I'm not sure that's what "Lions for Lambs" intends to demonstrate, but it does, exhaustingly. Essentially, if I have this right, we should never have invaded Iraq, but now that we're there, (1) we can't very well leave, and (2) we can't very well stay, so (3) the answer is, stay while in the process of leaving." Roger Ebert

As sports movies go this one is a basic by the numbers job, based on a true story. It has just the right blend of action, humour and drama to keep the viewer interested and its not too heavy handed on the more serious aspects so its good entertainment for all the family. Largely ignored in the Uk because its a basketball film, this is definitely worth a look if you enjoy sports movies.

Best described as a mix of Any Given Sunday & Varsity Blues, this is an entertaining movie, based on a true story, that delivers an insight as much into the politics of small town America, as it does the sport itself.
A serious movie, with less of a teen movie feel than the much lighter hearted Varsity Blues, and yet more intimate than the epic scope of Any Given Sunday. Aside from it's late '80s time period, it sits well alongside Remember The Titans.
Very well acted and directed, with excellent and hard hitting football scenes.
The film is set in 1988, and there many cultural references to the time (such as Public Enemy) that are of interest, particularly if you were of a similiar age to the young men depicted here (I turned 20 in the summer of ... Read More:

This has to be one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure of being forced to watch. It bears no connection to real-life bikers or biking, and is rather a film about two black street gangs, with Japanese motorbikes being included simply so they can pretend this is a biker's film. Trust me - it isn't. The "music" in this film is absolutely awful, being typical modern chart rap/hip-hop; the acting is appalling, there is no real plot, every minute is utterly dull and boring, and there are far too many utterly fake biking moments for this film to have an ounce of realism to it. This film is an insult not only to bikers, but also to true black culture. As a result, I personally despise this film and feel certain that the majority of other people will hate it too.

I had high hopes for this film - and maybe I've seen a lot of other good stuff recently, so it doesn't compare so well.

No-one looks like they are really stretched in this film - and for me 20 to 30 minutes longer than it could have been.

And ultimately it doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere.

I know it's based on a true story and may even be the true story - just because it is a true story doesn't automatically make it a great film.

I like David Mamet a lot, but this one was a disappointment for me. There seemed to be two movies, the first in the U.S. to find a kidnapped girl. This is treated with intensity and action. Then, whoops, the twist and we're off to Dubai to fight kidnapping for prostitution and ruthlessness in high places, and we're again treated to intensity and action. The main guy is played by Val Kilmer as one of these humorless Hollywood heroes for whom there is no obstacle which can't be overcome and whose backstory, as they say, has hidden depths of tragedy and alienation. Mamet insures that we see the guy's back without his shirt on and it's not a pretty sight. We learn nefarious things are going on with the big man's staff (the big man is, I assume, the President and the girl's father; she's been kidnapped) ... Read More:

Ever wonder why those midwestern universities - Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc - seem to be so obsessed with football? Watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, based on the book of the same title by H.G. Bissinger about the 1988 season of the Odessa (Texas) Permian Panthers high school team, we learn that the fixation is acquired early in life, especially if the town has nothing else going for it but prairie grass or, in the case of Odessa, stinky oil wells.

Billy Bob Thornton, as the Panthers' head coach Gary Gaines, gives what may have been the first Oscar-worthy performance of the 2004 film season. Odessa expects the Panthers to win the state championship, and no excuses for failure are acceptable. As Coach Gaines admonishes his players:

"You have the responsibility of protecting this team and ... Read More:

This film was ok i thought. I certainly wouldnt have given it five stars anyways. i just thought there wasnt really much to it. its basically just about a girl who tries to plan a family thanksgiving by asking her neighbours to help..and thats it!!
fair enough there might be a few hidden meanings and conflicted family relationships etc, but nothing much really happens. i also found the setting/environment to be a bit dark and miserable, which is probably what they were trying to portray, but just didnt like it. oh well..rent it and watch it with the misses, but not one for the lads.
