DVD : Blood Diamond [HD DVD] [2006]
This great Hollywood blockbuster is one of a series of thought provoking movies along with the constant gardener and shooting dogs .Filmed in South Africa , London and Mozambique ,the result is excellent and the photography in this movie is a good as it gets .

It tells the story of two people who must find a very large diamond for very different reasons , one to save his son and the other to become rich . The action scenes are very realistic is terms of showing the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone as Saving private Ryan showed the landings in Normandy .

Leonardo DiCaprio deserves praise for his portrait of the South African mercenary he developed very convincing South African accent , he and Djimon Honsou work very ... Read More:

The Island is actually a remake of a 70's film I remember watching when I was wee called The Clonus Horror. It's a film that always stuck in my mind as one that deserved a multi-million dollar remake, especially now as the idea of cloning humans is no longer within the domain of science fiction but has become a real theoretical possibility. I thought, what a thought-provoking film it could be, the moral dilemma of "growing" clones of the cream of our society only to freeze them until such times as their original counterparts needed a healthy organ transplant. How very Dostoyevsky, how very Nietzsche.

For instance what if the next Einstein or Newton were to develop a heart condition and would otherwise die? Would it be morally ... Read More:

passable but dissapointing this adds nothing new to the genre and the climax is awful

I was looking forward to Eragon so much. The book was good and I had high expectations. The film just failed to deliver.
The film had a few big names, (Jeremy Irons, Robert Carlyle, Rachel Weisz and John Malkovich) but even they coudn't save the story.
Admittedly, the book is long, but they have missed so much out that it will be hard to make the next story. For example, the story misses out at least two major places (Dras Leona and Teirm). Ignores one majoy character (Jeod) and hardly mentions some others (Roran, Angela and Ajihad).
The only realistic character is an animated dragon played by Rachel Weisz, who manages to put more enthusiam and realism into here role, using just her voice, than all of the other cast.

I am a huge fan of the eragon books. I am currently reading the two books (eragon and eldest) for the 3rd time and still enjoying them as much as I did the first time(can't wait for Brisingr, coming out in America September 20th). When I heard about a film for these books I was very excited. I would have seen the film in the cinema but the poor reviews put me off. When the DvDs came out I decided to review the film for myself.

Good points
I thought this film is technically accomplished, the special effects are brilliant. Saphria is amazing, the best dragon I have ever seen. The battle of farthen Dur at the end is also very good. The actors do a reasonable job, with Jeremoy Irons (Brom) and Ed Speelers (eragon) a cut above the others ... Read More:

I know theres more to movies than a pretty face but that said Angelina in this is just so incredibly gorgeous you end up glued to the screen. Everything she does she looks amazing. The film has quite a few stunning action scenes and very classy done. Watching a tough gorgeous woman do amazing stunts and kick some butt can never be a bad thing. I'd definatly watch again so in my book deserves its 5 star. Just what I seek in a good action film. The motorbike scene is great.

I can't stomach the actor (usually) but , blimey...he has shocked the pants off me! Leo can really act! This is a surprisingly good film, fine acting all-round, and it makes you think! God, how it makes you think. If I ever win the lottery, half will go to Amnesty International...I vow! How can these things happen, why do we let it happen, why are human beings such slime, or so good, or so heart-wrenchingly poor and oppressed! You could go mad just thinking about it. A good film makes you think...ergo...this is a good film. Well worth a watch!

If you take the martial arts classics of "Karate Kid" and "No Retreat No Surrender" and add some Beverly Hills / Fight Club ingredients - the outcome would be this movie. A fast flowing, punch, block, submit and kick, quick thinking adrenaline rush movie.

In my opinion there aren't enough of these movies. The majority of recent martial arts movies have overpaid Hollywood actors or an abundance of high wire CGI effect ridden pieces, that look good and are excellent films in their own right - but it's so nice to see a movie that looks really good, contains some excellent choreographed fight scenes and has some upcoming stars.

The story sees Jake Tyler (Faris), American football all-star who has anger issues in consequence to the death of his father. He ... Read More:

Back in ancient Giza a large circular artefact is buried under some capstones. Later in the 1920s an archaeological dig uncovers the 'stone' ring and various items of jewellery all dedicated to the Egyptian sun god Ra. Then in the 1990s, Dr Daniel Jackson, a radical Egyptologist who is widely disbelieved by the academic community is co-opted into a project run by the USAF, a project researching the large ring. Jackson with his differing interpretation of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs rapidly solves the problem of the ring showing it to be a transportation device, a Stargate. Together with a USAF commando team lead by the recently returned from retirement Colonel Jack O'Neill, Jackson and co. head through the Stargate to another world; a world populated by 'Egyptians' and their gods. ...
