I thought it's potrayal of the slums in Rio was excellent. You could really feel the pain and suffering through each character, from the begining to the end, false dawns and the main character somehow coming through it all to realise his dream. Some good perfomances in there. A really good watch.

"Bourbon, straight, with a bourbon chaser." That's Johnny Morrison's drink. Johnny's just been discharged from the Navy, along with two of his pals who were under his command. There's George Copeland (Hugh Beaumont), easy going and loyal, and Buzz Wancheck (William Bendix), big and burly, just as loyal to Johnny as George is, with a metal plate in his head, a variable memory and who sometimes goes into rages.

Johnny leaves his two pals in a Los Angeles hotel and goes to The Cavendish Court in the evening to meet his wife, Helen (Doris Dowling). The Cavendish is a high priced hotel with private bungalows, a careless attitude about parties and an aging security man who doesn't mind taking a few under-the-table dollars for various services. ... It's not anamorphic widescreen and it's only single-layer, too. There's a better one to be had from amazon.com, though of course it's region one, so be sure you can play it. This film's a keeper, so get the best copy available!

I was lucky enough to see this series on TV in the seventies and have long awaited its arrival on DVD. As I now live in Germany I've now even got my German girlfriend hooked on the characters and Geordie accent! Series 2 firmly establishes Jack Ford on the ladder out of the gutter. There are some excellent episodes which see our hero effortlessly bridging the social gulf between cobbled street, tree-lined avenue and country estate. The central character of Jack Ford is masterfully played by James Bolam in surely his finest role. The support cast are also excellent as is the writing which superbly captures the feel of the era. I shall purchase the whole series and enjoy these stories again and again over many years. This kind of quality never ages.

I believe the film follows on from the tv series. Whilst not as good as City of God, the film follows a similar theme as the people struggle to survive on the hill. The main characters have their own problems to contend with (one struggles with the responsibility of fatherhood whilst the other searches for a father he has never met). In the meantime a civil war rages upon the hill between rival gangs which pits our two stars on opposite sides however they have no say in the matter as other factors beyond their control come into play. It's not as hard hitting or thought provoking as the first film but i would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the previous film and/or tv series. The story is knitted together quite well with the use of flashbacks and previous ... Read More:

I thought it's potrayal of the slums in Rio was excellent. You could really feel the pain and suffering through each character, from the begining to the end, false dawns and the main character somehow coming through it all to realise his dream. Some good perfomances in there. A really good watch.

James Bolam shines in this series and is brilliantly supported by an excellent cast list.
I look forward to the rest of the series (when I can afford it).
