Watch out!

I bought this edition after reading the "Amazon.co.uk Review" above, where it says "On the DVD: Citizen Kane in this DVD special edition is beautifully remastered and comes with a feature illustrating the before and after of the restoration process. A 50-minute documentary, 'Anatomy of a Classic', hosted by Barry Norman, delves into the making of the film..." etc.

Big mistake: Nothing of the description of the DVD is true! The review is written about a completely different edition of the film, not this one.

The original film is a masterpiece, but this edition is certainly not!

Coming straight from a viewing of The Third Man, one of my all time favourites, and a great performance from Welles, The Lady From Shanghai was a bit of a dissappointment. Welles's acting is the foremost problem. It's as if he was unsure of what to make of the character, where to place him so to speak. Welles who would usually steal the whole scene with the tiniest gesture, here struggles to get involved in his character and give it any sort of real life and consistence.
The other problem is the flow of the movie. Apparently an hour was cut, much to Welles's dismay, and it certainly left the movie very disjointed at places.
Why should you give it a view, then? Well, for one thing the three other principal characters all have ... Read More:

First of all - this is a very good film. Certainly four star. For those who have only seen him in Spartacus Kirk Douglas' performance is exceptional and I am not sure that he deserved to lose out to Yul Brynner in "The King and I". Anthony Quinn was also nomianted for Best Supprting Actor playing Gaugain. Great performances, beautiful cinematography of the countryside that inspired van Gogh's pictures juxtaposed brilliantly with the pictures themselves.

So why not five stars? Why, oh why did they have to go to studio for some of the outdoor pieces like Vincent's declaration of love to Kay? The brilliant cinematography cuts to obvious studio grass in a jarring way. The score by Miklos Rozsa captures Vincent's stress and increasing madness ... Read More:

"The Enforcer" was directed by Bretaigne Windust (and Raoul Walsh, uncredited) in 1951 and starred Humphrey Bogart in the lead role as a District Attorney attempting to send a crime organization boss to the chair. Its loosely based on an organization, dubbed Murder Inc. by the press, who in the 1930's and 40's performed contract killings for the mob in the New York area. It is believed that they performed hundreds of such 'contracts'. "The Enforcer" is a gritty crime film with strong elements of film noir in many scenes which follows the investigation through a series of flashback sequences which is similar to Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941) and The Killers (Siodmak, 1946). While the direction is a bit rough around the edges, relying on some docu-noir techniques ... Read More:

The vintage advertising montage consists of two advertisements, both rather reflective of the time; as in deed they are. Neither are particularly interesting, but do show cinematic advertising history, and could be interesting to the aficionados of fifties film.

Photo Montage: The Bogart Collection, starts by a short biography of the man himself, though doesn't mention Sirocco or Casablanca. After the biography the montage begins showing pictures from his films advertisements.

The DVD menu layout is presented in a typically 50s style, with different text sizes and styles.

The disk is of a good strong material, with an understated design, which shows all that you need to know as well as the classic unimposing design.

Outstanding 1951 movie with James Mason as Rommel the gypsy German Nazi war hero. This movie presents the real story about Rommel, and it is not a silly Where Eagles Dare cartoonish movie. It is based on fact, and it is very enlightening.

The most accurate parts of this film are the husband and wife relationship, and his relationship with that Austrian Lunatic Adolf Hitler- Hitler had Rommel charged with Treason in early 1945 as Rommel had no repect for the crazy dictator.

The film also includes the subplot of Colonel Van Staffenberg who tried to assassinate Hitler with a bomb. Hitler survived with minor injuries.
In a nutshell this movie shows the real people behind the hated Nazi image. Rommel is given extra credit here for being ... Read More:
