This is one of the best versions of Mozart's masterpiece presently available in DVD. Its greatest attraction is obviously the presence of Renée Fleming and Bryn Terfel. Ms Fleming's interpretation of Donna Anna is truly exceptional: the candor and purity of her voice make a perfect expression of the pain and suffering of that noble woman who's father has been killed by the man who tried to rape her. Bryn Terfel is undoubtely a great singer, but he is not a credible Don Giovanni. His voice lacks that touch of evil that makes of the Don the seductor that everybody admires and fears at the same time, specially when he seduces Zerlina and sings below Donna Elvira's balcony. Mr. Terfel's physical appearance is the other factor that prevents us ... Read More:

This is an orgy of garish colours and bad taste, which given the subject matter is perhaps not inappropriate. Certainly I think it has dated badly when compared with the less overpowering visual productions these days. Costumes and set are, in a word, lavish, and the filming does help you to follow what is going on. I thought the direction needlessly cut to close-ups of characters' faces, such as when one character is singing about another. My biggest gripe is that they missed the chance to make a truly moving ending by not having any fake blood on Edita Gruberovna (who sang brilliantly by the way, but doesn't look quite young enough for the part). So instead of enjoying the moving musical interplay between father and daughter, I was thinking ... Read More:

I am no fan of studio-shot 'films' of operas. There is no substitute for the sound of the singers' feet on the boards, the muffled shifting of scenery in the background, the interaction (good or bad) with the audience which a live stage production provides. I approached this DVD warily, therefore, although the cast was too mouth watering to pass it up altogether.

I was wonderfully surprised. It is by far the best studio opera I have yet seen, thanks in great part to the brilliant (and sadly mourned) influence of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle directing what was to be his final work.

It is thanks, also, to a wonderful cast of singers, whom we now know as veterans, but then in their prime (the film was shot in 1988). Edita Gruberova (Fiordiligi) ... Read More:

DVD : Vienna State Opera Gala 2005 - Gala Concert 50th Anniversary Of The Re-Opening
On November 5, 2005 the Vienna State Opera held a gala to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the reopening on November 5, 1955 of the Opera after its destruction by Allied bombs in 1945 followed by the ten-year-long reconstruction. They pulled out all the stops and had a cast of stars (as well as current stalwarts of the Opera): five conductors (Ozawa, Gatti, Mehta, Thielemann and Welser-Möst) and such luminaries as Domingo, Baltsa, Gruberova, Hampson, Terfel and Kirchschlager, as well as the fabulous Opera chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic. The gala featured scenes from six of the seven operas given new productions in that 1955 season -- Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavalier, Aida, Meistersinger, Frau ohne Schatten and Fidelio. The whole thing lasted over three ... Read More:

This Barber of Seville is a funny version of this comic opera. The story is not over the top. John Rawnsley is a great Figaro with his manners and facial expressions. Maria Ewing is a real cross-grained adolescent. Claudio Desderi is a credible don Bartolo. Max-Rene Cosotti is a soft and loving count Almaviva and plays a great drunk soldier. The other parts are also done well. Even my fifteen year old son liked the story.

This is certainly a lighter and more comical production than others I have heard. Ferrucio Furlanetto plays a very entertaining Leporello, his deep, rich voice and playful acting making the catalogue aria stand out in particular. Sometimes it feels like he is a bit too over the top, but on the whole he makes a very good buffo character. Don Giovanni is played by Sir Thomas Allen who once again gives a superb performance in both the recitatives and arias. The set at the start of the second half culminating with "Deh, vieni alla finestra" shows off his fluent acting and truly stunning voice.
Carol Vaness plays a convincing Donna Elvira, but her voice sounds strained at times. I was dissapointed by Donna Anna in this production. She didnt seem comfortable in the ... Read More:

This is a 2 DVD set of the Gala Concert - performed live on 5th November 2005 - in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the reopening of the Vienna State Opera in 1955 after it was destroyed in the Second World War. Depressing black and white photos of the destroyed Opera House turn to a short tour, in colour, of the opulent new Opera House.

The Vienna State Orchestra lives up to its world renowned status and has five leading guest Conductors. All the singers - who are closely associated with the house - are truly outstanding and include Placido Domingo, Thomas Hampson, Edita Gruberova and Angelika Kirchschlager.
The same music is performed as in the 1955 re-opening concert.

The concert starts in majestic form with Beethoven's stirring ... Read More:
