I watched the original 'Goal' movie last year, and thought even that was pushing it a bit.. Newcastle training behind some sort of old mansion, Alan Shearer demonstrating personality (it must only come out in films), and of course, the inevitable winning goals from Nunez, which you could predict before the game even started. So I gave Goal 2 a go and see if the formula had changed. It hasn't.
This is basically just the first film set in Spain. Munez meets up with his annoying cockney mate 'Harris' who loves life off the pitch rather than on it (I guess thats well spotted for these days). The 2 pair up at Real Madrid after, tieing in with reality, the move of Owen to Newcastle, making it appear as a swap deal.
And so it all un-ravels ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this movie, which worked for me on several levels, or at least across several generations. I was there in the seventies listening to bands like Strange Fruit, and the film got the feel of those times right. Now I'm an old geezer like the band members, and the film got the feel of that right too. Connolly as roadie was a good choice, providing a salty anchor for the sometimes thin narrative.

One thing that seems 'off' about the way the film was promoted is the praise heaped on Mick Jones (Spooky Tooth, Foreigner) and Chris Difford (Squeeze) for the great music. Their names don't even appear in the IMDB listing for the film and I got the impression that the real force behind the music was Steve Donnelly, who is credited with ... Read More:

A friend recommended this to me and when he told me it was an animation I kind of disregarded it for some reason. However I finally checked it out and was astounded by its scathing social commentary of New Labour Britain. It's simply fantastic. Wonderful and varied animation, a fantastic soundtrack and perfectly suited voice overs. I've seen series 2 as well and I think it's even better. Please BBC, can we have all 3 series on DVD. It is shocking, then funny, then shocking again. My favourite sketches were Clive, chat room pervert, Daddy and Timmy and the hilarious Daisy Harris press conference. If you were to show this to people in 50 years time it would give them a perfect idea of urban Britain at the start of the 21st century. It is dark but it embraces the bowels ... Read More:

I am not sure that a psychological crisis of an over-forty French writer, a husband and father, and his strange dependance on a young and cynical man in London who provides male escorts, is really a topic which I would like to investigate and analyse.
It is well filmed. The actors perform very professionally. As a fan of Daniel Auteuil, I would say that this is not his best role, although the moral degradation of a hero is shown very carefully.

I would recommend this film as a good example of modern cinematograph, and another example of professional abilities of Daniel Auteuil. But NOT as a pleasant evening entertainment after a day of hard work...

Its been quite a number of years ago now but I do remember seeing the TV Adaptation of The Sculptress on BBC1.

I think the acting by Pauline Quirke, who played Olive Martin, was quite chilling and showed that she could move away from the role of Sharon she played in Birds of a Feather and other comedic roles she was used to. You were also convinced of Olive's innocence within the film.

But I do look forward to reading the novel version of The Sculptress to make comparisons between the TV Adaptation and the novel quite soon.

A Zed and Two Noughts (or Zoo) is Greenaway's best film. Made during the transition between his early experimental short films and his later more narrative (and more celebrated) ones, his free flowing structure is at its best here, fresh, witty and cerebral (some would also say pedantic). In later films, one has the feeling that Greenaway has try to go back to the style set by Zoo, but the results (like in 8 1/2 women) are almost unwatchable. The plot: two biologists twins working in a zoo, specialized in studying the putrefaction of animals, lose their wives in a car accident. They hook up with a strange woman who lost her leg in that accident. Meanwhile, there are references to Vermeer throughout (what does this has to do with zoology, only Greenaway knows), speeded up shots ... Read More:

When I first saw this on ITV a couple of years ago I was VERY disappointed, and thought maybe viewing it again on this R1 DVD would let me see it from a more objective view. But if anything it looks worse!!

Please note that this version, that was shown in the USA has HUGE edits from the one on ITV. Whole sections are cut, from the start, which I thought was one of the best bits, (with Boudica giving a blade to the water in ritual). The interesting idea of a love story between one of Boudica's daughters and a Roman soldier.....this doesn't even make an appearance in this version. It's been hacked apart, and lost some of the best parts in what was mostly a poor production.

I had high hopes of Alex Kingston in the role, she had the right look, but as soon ... Read More:
