I'll not add much to the already comprehensive reviews by others. Just to say this must be the bargain of all bargains - you get five DVD's with almost 13 hours playing time. To me Rising Damp is the finest of all the sitcoms although there were others on a similar level during that wonderful TV era. Rising Damp just makes you laugh - you can't help it and it is never forced. Unlike the tripe that is offered these days (either boring and bland or nasty and foul) Rising Damp has the finest ever comedy writng and the finest acting. It wasn't PC (thank goodness) but never caused nor meant any harm in its comedy.

If ever you are feeling a bit depressed or low just put on any of the Rising Damp DVD's and within minutes you'll be laughing ... Read More:

After having watched most of the BBC's period dramas, I still think that 'Tom Jones' is the best of them all. The original novel is difficult to dramatise but the writers here did a fantastic job. Henry Fielding is an intrusive narrator in the book and I found the decision to include him as a featured character in the dramatisation to be quite convincing. The acting is superb throughout. With the possible exception of Samantha Morton as Sophia Western, who comes across as rather bland, the cast is a joy to watch. Some of the supporting characters could not be better cast, just take a look at Brian Blessed who makes a perfect Squire Western (rotten teeth, swearing and all). I always found the Tom Jones of Fielding's novel one of the most likeable characters in ... Read More:

DVD : Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot - Death On The Nile [1989]
I am a great admirer of David Suchet's Poirot, but found this episode a big disappointment. Although beautfiully filmed amongst breathtaking Egyptian scenerey, most of the humour and warmth that makes a Christie novel a pleasure to read is missing from this production.

The three young people whose love triangle is at the centre of the mystery seemed to me entirely lacklustre. I couldn't work up the least interest in any of them.

Worst of all, two of the most charming and interesting people in the book, Timothy Allerton and his delightful mother, have had their characters grotesquely distorted until they bear virtually no resemblance to the originals, and there is an absolutely disgusting and quite gratuitous implcation of an incestuous ... DVD : To the Devil... A Daughter [1976] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
To the Devil a Daughter was Hammer's last horror film, but it makes for a less than grand slice of guignol and pales in comparison to their earlier Dennis Wheatley adaptation, The Devil Rides Out. Richard Widmark is the imported American star battling Christopher Lee's Satanist while trying to protect Nastassja Kinski from becoming host to a demon, but despite a few good scenes the film never really makes much of its premise and the ending is one of the biggest anticlimaxes in the history of horror.

The best part of it is the excellent documentary on Anchor Bay's Region 1 NTSC DVD, which is surprisingly frank about the film's shortcomings - including that non-ending - and Richard Widmark's tantrums on the set. Anchor Bay's transfer is also surprisingly good: unlike ... Read More:

DVD : Rising Damp: The Movie
The whole movie is filled with the original jokes from the series with some small changes. Which means if you have seen the complete series then this is just repitition. I don't know why the creators did this. It's like the best of.. with re -shot scenes... but the same dialogue. A bit bizarre. I still gave it 3 stars because it is a fantastic series overall. Not sure about this movie though.
