If you are interested in India or Indian history, or if you like Passage to India, you will love this. The atmosphere and historical feel is terrific.

Credit for the subtle story, in which the characters are complex with complex flaws, goes mostly to the author but also to the film for resisting the temptation to dumb it down.

But the best thing is surely the acting. I often watch a film and feel that one or two parts are perfectly played and the others are indifferent. In Jewel in the Crown I had that feeling with virtually all, if not all, the important parts. I particularly liked Tim Piggot Smith who was unsympathetic at first but by the end was almost a tragihero.

This DVD collection contains some of Dame Judi Dench's most lauded work from between the 1960's and the 1990's. The collection is a must if you are a keen DJD fan. A lot of people only really woke up to her talent when 'Mrs Brown' was first released in 1997. This is a fantastic collection, therefore, if you would like to see her in works dating back to before she became a screen 'star'. I have been trying to get hold of copies of 'Talking to a Stranger' and 'Absolute Hell' for ages, and have at last had the chance to see why her performances in each were so highly praised (and awarded) at the time.

The productions contained within the collection are hugely variable in both style and content, and some have dated less well than others. However, ... Read More:

Although I am still not certain who did what to whom and why, I nevertheless enjoyed a second watching of John Mortimer's mystery, "Summer's Lease," which I saw when it was first broadcast in the 1980s. "Summer's Lease" is John Gielgud's show. It does not matter how old he is; he still steals every scene as the outrageously libidinous old pirate of a father to Molly(coddle) Pargeter, a repressed 40-something wife and mother, who cannot help being embarrassed by his unrepentant tales of jolly "rogering", which he will tell to anyone, anywhere, and at any time, no matter how inappropriate the occasion. Mortimer has given Gielgud some of his best lines; one of my favorites is his apology for being a poor excuse for a socialist in a capitalist world: "Until we've got ... Read More:

Creating empathy for Harris with a German is not easy but this drama succeeded. First of all the film shows that Harris had a clear military target and a strategic objective. Furthermore the author plays devil's advocate in suggesting that Harris' strategy of aerial bombardment would have shortened the war as opposed to aiming at specific targets. Harris' duty as a soldier is to his men and his country regardless of the cost to others. Thaw plays him as a complex character: on the one hand as a ruthless soldier but on the other hand also as a human being. The film raises a lot of moral questions and does not provide easy answers but food for thought. It also sows what a fine actor John Thaw is: here he acts very restrained and controlled as opposed to his Morse/ Regan ... Read More:

An extraordinary film from Christine Edzard, who also directed Little Dorrit. The film has an atmospheric, almost Dickensian ambience. Jacobi is superb, underplaying his dual roles while clearly establishing two different characters. The supporting cast, especially Cyril Cusack, is also--forgive the repetition--superb. The subtle social satire regarding the haves' attitudes toward the havenots (and vice versa), is clearly relevant today.

DVD : Defence Of The Realm [1985]
The showbiz adage of 'never work with children or animals' was, within the British film industry, extended to 'never work with children, animals or Denholm Elliot'. He was, rightly, labelled a 'scene stealer' and with his passing, one of the 'true stars' were lost.

Gabrielle Byrne and Greta Scacchi star in this 1984 UK film, but the film, despite featuring a young Robbie Coltrane ( Cracker ), is forever Elliot's. Massively underrated, this film is a powerful indictment of the true 'powers that be'. Governments come and governments go, but the 'real' powerbrokers, along with the 'internal workings' remain in place, rumbling on.

Is this a political thriller, a journalistic thriller, a shadowy thriller even - scary too, maybe ?. Probably all and more ... Read More:

DVD : Rosemary & Thyme: The Complete Series 1 [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
You can probably tell from the title that this is not a series of hard-hitting thrillers. It is another in that fine tradition of British made-for-Sunday-evening picturesque dramas, which allow you to slump in your armchair and while-away the end of your precious weekend without undue stress or mental stimulation. The weather is always sunny, the gardens are glorious, the mystery is not too convoluted, and the murders are gore-free ( rather like Agatha Christie in scare-factor - i.e not at all ). I find them easy to watch and charming. Perfect escapist relaxation on a dark and dreary winters evening.

8.The Cherry Orchard (1962 & 1981) (REGION 1) (NTSC) starring: Judi Dench, Bill Paterson, Anton Lesser, Harriet Walter, Suzanne Burden

This dark British thriller about a hospital porter who passes himself off as a doctor is one of my all-time top 10 films. I come back to this page now and then to see if it's had a DVD release.

Criminally, it has not, and I suppose now it never will.
