It sounds so boring and dull that we should spend 90 mins or so watching a black and white film where 12 men are sitting around a table discussing a court case and not only that but give or take a few seconds the whole film is set in just that one room.

The fact that such a 'boring' film can put you on the edge of your seat EVERY time you watch it is pure testament to the art and skills of debutant director Sidney Lumet, writer Reginald Rose and the cast of twelve talented actors.

To prove the point, the remake from 1997 which also features sterling actors of great calibre such as Jack Lemmon and George C.Scott with an almost identical script could not pull it off as well as the 1957 version. In fact it was nowhere ... Read More:

Once Upon A Time in the West is Sergio Leone's masterpiece. Not only does it feature classic Leone figures, the silent gunman (Charles Bronson), the cruel hitman (A suprising turn from Henry Fonda) and the charasmatic rouge (Jason Robard), it is the only Leone film and one of the few westerns to have its central figure be a woman. It also pays homage to many great westerns, in particular High Noon with the films brilliant opening, and is also intellegent, many critics interpreting it as a parable on capitalism. As well as brains, it has muscles though, with terrific set pieces and landscapes, exciting action and, as ever with Leone's films, enough suspense to make you heart skip a beat. The music is also great, and it, like Leone's previous films, makes ... Read More:

A sequel of sorts to "The Longest Day," (same director, some of the same actors like Fonda playing different characters), this is one of the best restorations of a film I've seen in recent years. The picture and sound have been digitally remastered and 17 minutes of previously-unseen footage has been added (you even get a hilarious 1960s intermission card onscreen halfway through, how's that for restoring everything!). The film looks and sounds brand new again and there are new things to enjoy.

Having said that, the film itself doesn't do justice to the real Battle of the Bulge or Ardennes Offensive as it is also called. The real battle was fought in blizzard conditions, there are scenes in this film that look like summertime with not a flake ... Read More:

It lacked the special effects of Private Ryan but in quality of cast and numbers of extras, it was a masterpiece.

D Day was recreated well and with the likes of Henry Fonda and John Wayne gracing our screens, i was hooked all those years ago. Saving Private Ryan is probably a better watch now, with the effects available but my heart is still with the old fellas.

suffering defines the human spirit of survival-true-and here
steinbeck was giving a simple message -survival is for the fittest in any civilization whether democratic or fascist, here the oklahoma dustbowl is the land of dispossessed and their suffering is the message to the fulfillment of their broken dreams ,poverty can be a curse and it is restrictwed not only to africa but white american kids dying of kwashiorkor secondary to malnutrition.

ford gets the steinbeck message across with simplicity and the materialism is not crticised just observed as a reality while the people are evicted from ancestral homes and they die and starve on route 66.

the movie is sentimental ,emotional and intelligent all at the same time as human existence itself ... Read More:

North by Northwest is one of Hitchcock's great thrillers. Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint star. The mistaken identity plot plays well to Grants strengths as the man confused by the insistence of others that he is George Kaplan, the mysterious spy. The balance between thriller and comedy is very well judged. The look of this movie is the key to its success along with the many set pieces. The frantic struggle of Grant against the hood's attempts to pour a bottle of scotch down his throat conveys real violence and panic.

I Confess is better remembered for its star, Montgomery Clift, than as one of Hitchcock's great movies but it is still powerful stuff. The theme is a strong one that has been copied and adapted elsewhere. Clift's character has to wrestle with his conscience ... Read More:

The Battle of Midway is a great film with many great actors giving great performances in a story of the turning point in the Pacific War. OK the filmakers did save money by reusing FX from Tora Tora Tora and 30 Seconds over Tokyo but that does not take away from one of the best stories of world War 2.

i must admit i put this film in the dvd player and my heart sank because its black/white,it does not tell you that in the information about the film.but when you start watching the film it soon puts you back in a good mood, henry fonda has that touch of class about him thats hard to resist, anthony mann directs another classic western he was probabley the best in the business and that includes the great john ford.

This is the first film which uses the US Cavalry as the background/set (as much as Monumental Valley) for telling us a typical John Ford story, there are the values of decency and common sense and the very important sense of humor in one side and bigotry and stupidity in the other... and that on the same side (meaning life in the regiment which is a metaphor of a rigid society)... confronted against the Indians who as usual in early Ford films just plays the danger OUTSIDE...
Filmed in black&white in the exceptional way of the master it has passed with honors the terrible true test of time and has become a classic.
The script is what you can expect, but mainly is a confrontation between the martinet colonel (from the East) played convincingly by Henry Fonda and the professional (in the ... Read More:
