Absolutely brilliant adaptation and a great ensemble cast. I have to single out Eileen Atkins performance as the one which affected me most - the scene where she sits struggling with her ideas of convention as to whether she can attend the funeral in support of her friend is breathtakingly good - so much of what you understand is going on is not dialogue based but entirely down to her performance.

More drama of this quality please.

DVD : Much Ado About Nothing [1993]
Flicking through my recommendations on Amazon today I came across this. Well I bought it when it first came out on DVD so thought I would add my voice to those other reviews about the quality. I won't say to much about the film. For me it was very, very enjoyable. Well acted (a pleasure to see so many British stars mixed with those from across the pond), well directed (the scene where Beatrice and Benedict are 'captured' by the trap is superb), with good music and wonderful scenery.

Such a shame then that the DVD is so sloppily put together. In Mono only! No scene selection. No 'making of'. No directors' comments. Surely the time has come for a new edition?

I have most of Kenneth Branagh's work and enjoyed ... Read More:

I love this film! Shakespeare converted well into film form is a delight (see Branagh's 'Much Ado' as well) and this film is excellent.
All the characters are note perfect, and there is not a single weak performance amongst them.
Although some scenes are swapped around or merged, that helps to show the cohesion of the plot strands and works extremely well.
Characters have a dark as well as a light side; Sir Toby is a classic funny drunk, but he's also a man who is exploiting Sir Andrew for his money and keeping Maria at arm's length. Mel Smith is absolutely brilliant in the role.
Feste the Clown is a much more tragic figure than the only usually portrayed; a man with a deep melancholy, driven back to Olivia's house for lack ... Read More:

The chickens are tired of life on the farm, and fed up with being eaten when they get too old to produce eggs. They hatch various plans to escape , but none succeed. Then Rocky the Rooster (voiced by Mel Gibson) lands among them, and they think that he can fly and will help them to escape. But can he really fly?

This film is very amusing and the children love it. I enjoy it too. I do however always find myself rather cynically wondering (at the end of the film, when they have escaped to their life of freedom), how they are going to fare the first time they encounter a fox, or when it gets cold and food is scarce and they find themselves longing for their nice warm hen-house back on the farm. Stifle such doubts, just enjoy it.

I have seen this film once and it was one time too many. Sure it is well acted and there are some fine performances, but it is utterly depressing and without hope.

The characters seem embroiled in a sense of impending doom and whilst I do not ask for happy clappy Disney traits in all films, this one lack anything of note. It is not funny in any way shape or form and should be avoided at all costs.

If you like Stephen Fry, buy the Blackadder series or a Bit of Fry and Laurie.

Writing a play is a tiresome burden when you don't have the faintest idea what it is going to be about but you need to hand it over real soon. Fortunately, Will Shakespeare finds his muse and the authors of the screenplay also had at least a brief encounter with theirs.
Basically a romantic comedy SIL offers much more that the standard "boy meets girl, boy loses girl" scenario - they present it in a fantastically well rendered setting taking as much as they could from the Swan of the Avon.
A perfect way to spend an afternoon - you get your share of romance, adventure, and literary history (the latter should not be taken at face value, however). Do you need more?

Warm and funny and slightly touching (shed a few tears at the end), in fact I've acquired a copy for my collection along with the 1987 version, this is actually one of the rare examples when a short adaptation works just as well.

This is possibly the worst film I have seen in a few years. McKenzie Crook is dull, the story is stupid and unbelievable. There are some excellent actors in it, but their time is wasted. The car's nice, but that's about it. Don't waste your money or an hour and a half of your life.

Excellent film set in the very bleak 50s. Imelda Staunton plays Vera Drake, a resolutely cheerful and kind lady whose world falls apart when it is found out that she has been carrying out backstreet abortions for years. As Vera's trial takes place towards the end of the film, there is no clear reason given as to why she helps "young girls in trouble" (as she would put it) but a distinct hint that, like many of the girls, she was sexually assaulted as a young woman.

Staunton is superb as the stoical then silent Vera and is excellently supported by Phil Daniels as her loyal husband and Alex Kelly as her painfully shy daughter among others. A powerful, thought-provoking film and historical insight, which is well worth seeing.
