This is the Ring how Wagner imagined it would/should be. Every stage shot and directorial decision follows what 'The Master' had in mind and wrote down. The director is Otto Schenk and 2009 marks the last time this landmark Ring Cycle will be shown at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hopefully, it will be filmed in glorious HD!

Nonetheless, having this on 'ordinary' DVD still preserves what is a most enjoyable and watchable version. There are recordings of this out there that are simply unwatchable (Naxos/Lothar Zagrosek) and others that will challenge your mind (DG/Boulez) and are highly recommendable, but for wanting to know what Wagner had in his mind, this is the one.

Having said that, some of it looks very silly. ... Read More:

Another great production from the Met. I bought this DVD without the benefit of a review. I was not disappointed. This is a typically traditional production from the Met but imaginitive lighting and colour creates a sense of modernity. Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming and the dasterdly James Morris are in fine form as is the Met orchestra under James Levine. The picture and sound quality of the DVD are excellent. This is one of the best of my growing collection of operas on DVD- now over 70, and I can recommend it without hesitation.

So I'm a new opera fan and I have a large collection of CDs, but I have never been to a live one.
This DVD was the first opera I bought and now I can say it is definately my favourite. Firstly, I love Jose Carreras and he is my favourite tenor. He may not have the technical brilliance of a Pavarotti but his phrasing and emotion come through in every song.
Secondly, I agree that the scene set in the Latin Quarter was overdone but it was still fun and enjoyable. As the opera progresses to the sadder and more emotional parts, Puccini is a magician! (which he has been critisised for!)

This Opera is truly enchanting and the performances are first rate

Having thoroughly enjoyed Rheingold (see my review), I was slightly disappointed with this production. After the splendour of Rheingold, this suddenly seemed a very normal staging. Perhaps it's not helped by the fact that Siegmund isn't a particularly strong role, at least, not here. All is redeemed by a wonderful third act, from the moment Levine's baton heralded the start of one of opera's most famous tunes, through to some special effects (at last) at the end of the piece. In between is some gorgeously sung plaintive pleading by Brunnhilde, sung by Hildegard Behrens, for me, undoubtedly the star of the show. As you'd imagine, it's a traditional staging, and well-enough done, but the time did drag a bit.
