DVD : Ode To Freedom - The Berlin Celebration Concert [1989]
The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. On Christmas Day 1989, only six weeks later, due to the organizational skills of Leonard Bernstein (and others) an historic concert of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was given in the Schauspielhaus in the former East Berlin with instrumentalists and singers from a number of different countries. These included orchestra members from the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra of the Kirov Theater of Leningrad, the London Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris. The choruses were those of Bavarian and Berlin Radio as well as, unusually, the Children's Choir of the Philharmonie Dresden. Soloists were June Anderson (soprano, American), Sarah Walker (mezzo, British), ... Read More:

It would be fair to say I am a Mozart fanatic! To me his operas are a stairway to heaven. There are certain aspects of them that reflect the sublime in a way that no other composer can ... though they do come very near to the mark!!

For me Magic Flute is one of his top 5 ... Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutti and Clamenza di Tito ... , but I think it is extra special because not only is it his last work but it has a hidden message and a charm in its almost fairy tale allegory that makes it unique.

The director has to capture the magic of this opera with the sublimity of the music and in this production I believe he has done just that and the only reason I give it 4* is because of the Queen of the Night. ... Read More:

I've owned this performance for some years, firstly on video and then on DVD, and have always found it a disappointment, especially in comparison to Levine's marvellous "Ring" and outsanding "Meistersinger" from the NY Metropolitan Opera. From the prelude to Act 1 the music seems to drag, and key moments do not come to life. The Klingsor's kingdom lacks its otherworldly quality here, and the Good Friday Music does not bring its usual magic. This lack of passion transmits itself to the singers and chorus and seems to last throughout the opera.

A number of critics have blamed Levine's slow tempos for the malaise. I don't think this is the explanation. For example, although the prelude to Act 1 lasts 14 minutes here compared to 12 minutes ... Read More:

The music, singing and orchestra are great if you keep your eyes shut (which makes having the DVD pointless). I agree with previous reviewers, this is a very shabby production. I'm sure a lot of "thought" went into the staging and production, but the problem is that not only it looks bleak (and in complete contrast to the music which is everything but bleak) it confused the plot even more than it already is. Wagner subjected this opera to several revisions, to the point that it can give problems in terms of which version (or elements of) to use when it's performed. The several revisions are also a reflection of the fact that the plot is rather vacuous - if it weren't for the beautiful and majestic music, it would be rather silly. Not only the idea of "Venusberg", ... Read More:

The four parts of the 1999 Ring from Staatsoper Stuttgart were assigned to different Directors and casts, each music drama to be treated as a separate entity.

Act 1 of Walkure is the gem of the Zagrosek Ring, and the only performance I have personally seen that fully portrays the burning intensity of the genetic attraction (romantic love between siblings, usually occurring when separated at birth) between the twins, even the fine Nadine Secunde in both Barenboim and Haenchen Rings seems very conventional alongside the burning passion produced by Christof Nel a psychoanalyst. Angela Denoke is totally believable as the downtrodden wife of Hunding (Attila Jun), and Robert Gambil is a fine Siegmund.

In Acts 2/3 the Wotan (Jan- Hendrik Rootering) lounges in a modified ... Read More:
