Ive waited soooooooooooo long for this to get released on dvd i almost forgot what even happens in the film. this was a childhood fave of mine and when i strolled up hmv stairs and saw this on the new releases shelf i nearly died of shock wow it is stil as fun and enjoyable as it was when i was young dont take this too seriously, its very sureal, very fun, and very silly oh and lea thompson is hot buy this movie

Being a big fan of the Highlander films (excluding 4-5, including search for vengeance)and Christopher lambert I bought fortress years ago on vhs expecting pretty much the same sort of fair as Highlander and I was nicely surprised. What surprised me the most was how watchable fortress is, I must have watched my old vhs dozens of times and to be honest im still not tired of it now. The plot is very easy to get into, if a little clicé but that doesnt matter you dont need to think with fortress because it is good old straight forward action fair that any sci-fi fan can enjoy especially on a rainy day. Semiramide is a long opera,but full of virtuoso singing from beginning to end,cadenzas,fioriture,coloratura,its full of them,put this disc on and be amazed at what the human voice can do.The sets are fantastic,the orchestra and conductor a dream,BUY IT.

Having bought this as a christmas present i found that inside was actaully a copy of the best sixties musical, a mistake the first time but also a problem with the copy amazon replaced, the whole saga took 3 months and was resolved when amazon gave me a £5 voucher and told me that they were no longer stocking the product . AVOID.

I have to say that Il Trovatore is one of my favourite Verdi Opera's, with a great mix of drama and suspense, twinned with the most unlikely of story lines! There are ample opportunities for the musicians and artists to shine, and some did in this production! In particular, Dolora Zajick, much the best actor on the stage, gave a passionate and inspired performance as Azucena. She has a wonderfully resilient voice, and carried the role off superbly. I also enjoyed Sherrill Milnes' performance as the "evil" Count Luna. Milnes wouldn't be out of place as the baddy in one of those silent films twiddling his moustach! Just buy it and enjoy it!!. There are no decent DVDs of Vivaldi and Haendel's operas. To my knowledge, this is the only one on the market.

I've owned this performance for some years, firstly on video and then on DVD, and have always found it a disappointment, especially in comparison to Levine's marvellous "Ring" and outsanding "Meistersinger" from the NY Metropolitan Opera. From the prelude to Act 1 the music seems to drag, and key moments do not come to life. The Klingsor's kingdom lacks its otherworldly quality here, and the Good Friday Music does not bring its usual magic. This lack of passion transmits itself to the singers and chorus and seems to last throughout the opera. A number of critics have blamed Levine's slow tempos for the malaise. I don't think this is the explanation. For example, although the prelude to Act 1 lasts 14 minutes here compared to 12 minutes for Knappertsbusch ... Read More:
