My MP Ann Cryer is in this film as an extra.

One of the best childrens films ever made in the UK. Jenny Agutter recently made another version ( her third; she was in the BBC serial of the same book prior to this version) this time playing the mother. However it was not as good and lacked the charm of Lionel Jeffries version.

Jeffries having been an actor secured first rate performances from his excellently cast. He tried to repeat the success with another children's film shot in Yorkshire THE WATER BABIES but it failed due to very poor animated scenes made in Poland.

The opening scene, on i presume the Yorkshire Moors, will be with me forever. This is a classic film with a blend of humour and horror neatly rolled into one. The special effects were cutting edge at the time.

I can't believe it's more than twenty five years old. Quick, get me a wheelchair !!

All the reviews here are of the movie. They could apply to the VHS tape as easily as the DVD. What about the DVD? Are the video and audio quality better than a VHS tape? Is it good enough to justify paying to ship the DVD outside of the UK to replace a tape (since it is not available here on DVD)?

Update: I took a chance and ordered the DVD. The video and audio quality are certainly better than a VHS tape, but it is also hardly up to current standards for DVD. The audio is only stereo. A 5.1 audio mix would have made the atmospheric sound and the excellent music score even more vivid. Amazon.uk describes the video as 4:3 aspect ratio, which is technically correct, but what the disc actually presents is the 2.35:1 original aspect ratio ... Read More:

The Invisibles is a series about two friends Maurice Riley (Anthony Head - Buffy The Vampre Slayer, Doctor Who) and Syd Woolsey (Warren Clarke - Dalziel And Pascoe)who were members of "The Invisibles" the best robbers in town. They are joined by the son of the 3rd Invisible Hedley (Dean Lennox Kelly). Trying to stay on the straight and narrow they are forced to do one "final" job - but things don't go as smoothly as planned.

The cast are excellent and have a good on screen chemistry. Jenny Agutter (Spooks, An American Werewolf In London) is superb as Maurice's wife who is determined that he goes straight. The shows premise is basically "New Tricks" only with ex cons rather than ex coppers and the result is just as entertaining.

"Into my heart a air that chills from far yon country blows"...... a most beautiful film, visual poetry a sumptious feast from Roeg, we are taken with Agutter and a young Roeg Junior across the Australian Outback when the two siblings are abandoned by their Father's suicide and botched attempts to kill them. They are befriended and saved by a young Aborigine and together they experience their own rites of passage. The most vivid and memorable scene is when later Agutter now an adult has a flashback over her husbands' shoulder and we are taken back to that lost land of innocence and freedom one to which she can never return as can none of us

This a very charming movie set in the turn of 20th the Century.
I have seen both versions and in my view they are both very fine movies that the whole family can watch.
I have to agree with one of the reviews, the brief commentary at the beginning and the end of the movie
is in my view detrimental to the production. I really dont understand why the writers did that.
Other then then the commentary the movie is very fine.
The acting is wonderful, the settings and costumes are beautiful.
This movie is worth while adding to your DVD library.
Especially if you are looking for family movies

Having watched again after a long break I think this guy was a breath of fresh air.

Whilst I love his attitude I fear that had I met him in real life I would have punched him on the nose for being such a snob.

But his, almost tourette-like, ability to say or do the "wrong" thing without thinking/caring and his love of animals, cars, his wife (!) and loyalty to the English and nordic racial type make him a rare person when contrasted to the marxist multiculturalist/quisling type of political traitors that inhabit Palace of Westminster nowadays..

While the Carlton 2-DVD release offers both the original theatrical cut and the extended version of the film (kicking off with the gathering of Himmler, Canaris and Hitler in Bavaria which led to the fateful chain of events), this only offers the extended version. I personally think the post-production guys were almost fully justified in the cuts and change to the documentary footage for the pre-credits sequence: the documentary footage is both pithier and also more immediately creates a sense that this story 'could have happened' (rather than presenting us with an embarassing impersonation of Hitler). In short, the theatrical version is pacier, and doesn't give us so much time to reflect on the slightly absurd premise of the story.

On the other hand, there's at least two scenes cut ... Read More:
