Quite simply this is brilliant. Producing the book as a TV series gave the director the opportunity to indulge in Waugh's lush and vivid text and whole sections of the book are quoted verbatim. And of course, in hindsight, the casting was inspired, with Jeremy Irons as Rider and Anthony Andrews as the rather beautiful Sebastian Flyte. But don't forget such cameo's as Nikolas Grace as the effete Anthony Blanche - masterful!
The film I understand, leaves a lot to be desired, so better to buy this AND read the book. You will regret buying neither.

Goodness me, people do get their knickers in a twist about this series. Although there is plenty that is excellent about it (namely the performances) there is one crashing great problem with it and that's the screenplay which is just plain lazy to the point of excess (if that isn't some kind of oxymoron).

This must have been an easy ride for John Mortimer. All he did was take the dialogue from the novel and stick it in screenplay form, voila. Don't believe me? Read a chapter of the novel, watch an episode, keep going to the end and you'll see what I mean. And any other gaps are just plugged with long tracts of voiceover which is always an indication that a writer doesn't have the creativity to do something more filmic.

It seems to fall to me to rain on the parade of admiring reviews here. Yes, the film is beautifully filmed, especially at Lyme Regis, which I know quite well. The main street (and the Cobb, a kind of mole jutting out into the sea) was totally turned back in time and brilliantly. Yes, the acting is excellent, though I do not find Iron's lugubrious bourgeois almost-gentleman in Angst act too enthralling (as seen elsewhere, e.g. in Brideshead Revisited).

In the end, I just did not find this story of parallel 19th and 20th Century love stories (both led by Irons and Streep) very interesting; neither to me was the 19th Century one very plausible, whereas the 20th Century affair was simply banal.

Worth seeing once, though.

The 194-minute director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven gives the film more room to breathe, but it won't make converts of the unbelievers. Instead, it's a more leisurely paced version of the film for the faithful who liked the theatrical cut and want to revisit its world and characters in a little more detail. Closer in style and tone to sixties roadshows than Scott's Gladiator, and all the better for it, in many ways it's the richest and most ambitious of the recent batch of epics. It's more of a journey in the extended version, and a bloodier one (the added violence will please the gore hounds), although there are a few moments that tip over into self-indulgence and could have been tightened or omitted entirely.

The extended opening allows more character ... Read More:

The Lion King is my all time favourite disney film, i just love the story the music and the way it all comes together. I have watched this film countless times and still want to watch it again. The newer disney films are in comparison rubbish to the lion king its such a big hit,so gripping and i have looked in countless shops for it and to no luck. There are a million and one copies of 101 dalmations,Aladdin but no Lion King because no1 wants to part with it, its a Quality film that i will love forever.

I sometimes struggle to remember why I liked certain films so much but as I get older and my memory fades I use a simple acid test. If I remember them so well after so many years with my memory, then it must be pretty good. And yes I remember much of "The Mission". It sets its sights very high indeed and deals in weighty emotive subjects. The inexorable expansion of civilisation and the effects of those native peoples that come under its influence.
The story revolves around the evangelical efforts of Roman Catholic priests to convert the local South American natives to catholicism and the effects of the wider church decisions on these small enclaves and outposts of Christianity. The priests who go out to evangelise are painted in a good light, whilst the Roman Catholic church ... Read More:

When Bruce Willis secured the role of John McClane in DieHard he was little more than a wisecracking TV comedian - star of the successful American show Moonlighting. A few minor lightweight film roles including Blind Date and The Return of Bruno had done little to extend his career any further than the small screen. For Willis life without Moonlighting wasn't looking great.
Then came DieHard. The role of officer John McClane, unwittingly caught up in a daring skyscraper set robbery, was the perfect fit. Violent, beautifully directed and full of jawdroppping stunts and mayhem. Willis wisecracked his way through the film and onto the Hollywood A list.
The first DieHard still remains one of the finest action films ever. The one man against overwhelming odds idea has been copied ... Read More:

and most of it wasted. Most of the stuff that made the book enchnting and exciting has either been watered down or left out, the Raz'ac who are the bane of the book's good guys, went from awsome, dangerious and scary in the book to weak, dumb looking, and as tough as a wet paper bag in the film.
The relationship between Eragon and his dragon in the book is deep and heart wrenching, in the film it's shallow, rushed and you think 'why should i care?'.

This could have been soo good, but, it's not.
