A powerful and truly inspiring adaptation of The Other Boleyn Girl. All the performances are stunning. The rough camera work gives it an immediacy and power which is utterly compelling. It's low budget naturalism is a virtue. It doesn't distract with flash costumes and chocolate box locations. Instead it draws you in to it's world and makes you totally involved with the characters and their lives. Gripping from beginning to end.

When it aired in my country in the summer of 2002 and i loved it. it was one of the best mini series i have ever watched. i don't know if it was the subject, gay romance in 19 century England, but this is to this day still in my top 5 of most see mini series.
the plot, the script, the character and the acting are amazing. you can tell it is BBC made due to it's quality.
i highly recommend it and If you don't want to buy try and rent it from somewhere I promise it be worth it.

After reading so many reviews praising this film, i just had to see it.
I tried three times to 'get' into this movie, but after i finally managed to sit through it till the end, i discovered it wasn't worth the effort.
Part of the problem for me is Daniel Day-Lewis. His character just doesn't regester as interesting. I've given it two stars for average because the last ten minutes were good.
It's not a bad film...just nowhere near as entertaining as 'The Patriot' or 'Braveheart', or countless other action flicks. But like i say it might be because i couldn't identify with any of the characters. I'm in the minority, so if you 'enjoy' this film then great. It was very disappointing for me, even 'Dances with Wolves' held my attention more ... Read More:

This film had a lot of minor flaws, which could have been major ones, except for the fact that it had bundles of charm, which made it oddly attractive to me and the person I went to see it with. It was very much like an old stlye british drama that could have been made in the sixties ("Spring and Port Wine" springs to mind). However, I appreciate that many people do not have the patience for such movies nowadays. These days the public seem to want all-action, or violence, sex or melodrama. Anything more slow paced and gentle just won't do. I am glad Craig is the sort of actor who will lend himself to this type of work and I would applaud him for it.

Certainly if you were a teenager in the seventies it helps to appreaciate this film. To quibble about ... Read More:

I first watched this film with no idea as to the story, other than what is written on the back of the DVD box. And I am so glad I did. Having now read the novel upon which it is based, I have to admit it is one of the very best adaptations I have ever seen. The music, costumes and script are perfect and the acting superb. Gillian Anderson gives a particularly stunning performance as Lily Bart, the tragic heroine.
I have chosen not to give away the plot in the hope you'll take my word and give it a go, but I challenge you not to cry.

One of the most outstanding BBC single dramas. Perhaps it shares the blame a little too evenly, but you cannot have everything.

Why is it that the BBC's outstanding dramas are never published in the UK. I think also of "Foreign Field" (USA only). The BBC seems to make a habit of only publishing its rubbish lately and ignoring its gems.

When you're fiftyish and have just lost your job, what do you do next?

If you're Frank in "On A Clear Day," then you swim the English Channel, and confront some nasty personal demons. This wee, warm Scottish flick does a great job balancing out comedy and melancholy, with a bit of family strife thrown in. It's just a small-scale, sweet little film.

A Scottish shipyard is laying off workers, and Frank (Peter Mullan) suddenly finds himself without a job. His wife Joan (Brenda Blethyn) starts training to be a bus driver, and his relationship with his son Rob (Jamie Sives) remains chilly, as it has been ever since his other son's death. Frank becomes increasingly depressed and antsy, unsure what to do next.

But while on a "booze cruise" ... Read More:

The mood is one of sadness, nostalgia, what might have been: an elegiac view of a recent past, a time already no more than a memory, beautifully filmed, full of haunting images.
It is not an attempt at realism; the interpretation relies heavily on symbolism, a shorthand to convey two decades of British social history.
It starts with a young man, Paul (Damian Lewis) of working class background who has made a fortune in property speculation in the 70's. Like any young man who finds himself wealthy beyond expectation, the power it gives him to indulge all his flights of fantasy leads to excesses and he is busy squandering his genius, cultivating a motley gathering of friends and hangers-on who come `like pigs to the trough' to gorge themselves on the riches he makes ... This is a gorgous dramatisation of a great book, something to watch again and again.
I taped this when the BBC broadcasted it, fully prepared to buy it as soon as the region 2DVD was released. I'm still waiting for that to happen. It's a complete mystery to me why it has to take so long.
So for now I just keep hoping my old VHS tapes won't degenerate too fast.
